What gives with dealers on tractor house?

Thank you for the credit. Thats the toughest thing about being in sales, and is what will drive me back to custom home building. I dont like feeling like a slimy sales guy, I want to be as honest as possible with everyone. However, some of the way we have to price things and choices we have to make are tough decisions.

I think buyers (and some people in this thread) think they know the system and get a great deal, but then when faced with the truth get upset. I'd love to start a thread highlighting how stuff is ACTUALLY priced, so people can be aware. Maybe it would save some people some money.

You may think what ever you like about me. Problem here is past experience with buying many cars/trucks/tractors/dozers ect ect over the years. EVery single time I have called someone who said "Call for Price" their price has been WAY higher than everyone else! I don't claim to know everything about sales and never will but my past experience dictates my future shopping practices and so far I have been very pleased at the deals I have found on many different things when talking to others who have purchased the same or similar things.

You talk about trade in value and making money on the trade in rather than the newly sold equipment but I certainly don't know anyone who does this at least in hole on one or the other. Most that I know base the trade in value on making some money but not all and those who claim to make their money on the trade usually are full of it.

I have purchased right from the hole sale lots the same cars/trucks and equipment that other people I know just traded in a day or so before and thought they got a great deal. My all time favorite was the car that my neighbor traded for 2000 toward a new one and I brought it home the very next day after paying a measly 150 dollars for it. What is the most interesting thing about that one and related to your post is that dealership always claimed they make their money on the sale of the trade so they can give you the best deal on a new car!

Now I am not claiming your full of it or anything like that but ones personal experience gives them guidance on how to move forward in the future and for me its been best to walk away when I see call for price! This being especially true for any used equipment.

Simple question......Why even advertise if you are only gonna use a stock photo and put call for price?

I can go on whatever mfg website, or look in a phone book for dealers and call all day long. Dont need to waste money on an ad for that.

IMO, it is just a way to try to pry a phone number out of me so you can keep bugging me every week.

Around here, we know who the dealers are. And their ads rarely have new equipment listed. Because I understand the crap about not being able to advertise below a certain price...etc. The ads are full of used equipment and prices though.

Having worked in an automobile dealership I know a bit about the sales of big ticket items like tractors so I must say I agree with GManBart, TSO and CDennyRun on this subject. I'm glad I am not in a position where I have to do business with a dealer like ShowroomShine.

In my experience, buying an auto is NOTHING like buying a tractor. Buying a tractor takes 30 mins and is much less pressure than buying a car. There aren't nearly the "sales gimmicks" in the tractor business as there is in the car business. You better be good at math when you go to buy a car because they will fudge numbers like you wouldn't believe. Buying a tractor has always been straight forward for me and you don't have nearly the "magic" going on. Not saying you can't be "taken" by a tractor dealership, but buying a vehicle is really risky because you're very likely to get taken somehow. That's why car dealerships have bad reputations and tractor dealerships don't. They are not the same, at least the ones I've dealer with. I have never bought equipment from dealers that sell tractors "on the side" or out of their backyard or anything like that. I'm talking about dealers the sell nothing but tractors.

There certainly aren't the same depth of money adding gimmicks with tractors, but just as I've demonstrated with my local Kubota dealer (who prices everything near MSRP, and you fight for every dollar, sometimes over a several week period), and also demonstrated by ShowroomShine in this thread (where he plays pricing games to different types of buyers)... There certainly are still opportunities for dealers to manipulate pricing on tractors.

Agree. I recently bought a Kubota tractor and priced 4 different dealers around my state and just like a vehicle, pricing was all over the place. I ended up buying from a dealer 2 hours away instead of the local dealer because the price difference was significant. Same tractor, same options, $1500 price difference.

Hey RollingFarms, I'm impressed: you were able to get a tractor priced at four different dealers and then buy it at a dealer two hours away all in thirty minutes. Wow!

You know what I meant, don't be foolish. From the time I made the deal to signing all the papers took no more than 30 mins. I got all my quotes via email the week before, picked which dealer I wanted to do business with, drove down to inspect the tractor and made the deal. I already had my financing lined up through Kubota before I arrived. I filled out a total of 4 papers.
