"there will come a day when the government will ban the use of all pre-emission diesel engines."
Do you really think so? Like they did with leaded fuel gas engines? I remember it said those engines would be banded.

Yes, I really think so.

Leaded gas engines subject is totally different. What they were banning then was the lead in the gas, not the engine.

Now they are regulating the emissions of the engine, which can only be controlled by redesigning the engine and it's components, and then banning the use of anything built prior.

Bingo. Yahtzee. Goal. Fill in your personal preference.

Like I said earlier, in the Construction business this has already started. When a contractor is bidding a Government contract he is under scrutiny for what type of equipment he will use.

They will grandfather the older diesels in for most of the country between the coasts. Attrition will weed them out over time. And there are all kinds of loopholes. I bought a 2013 Freightliner semi truck without a motor or trans. Took a factory remanned pre-emission, pre-EGR motor and put it in and a factory remanned 18 speed. All titled, licensed and has been out on the road working since September 2012. Not a peep from any government agency. All legal. The EPA ties the emissions requirements to the year the motor is made, not the truck. So if the truck doesn't come with a motor, then one can do something like this. If the truck comes with a motor, you are restricted to meet the emissions level of the new motor throughout the truck life span. I don't go to California where things get weird regarding this kind of thing, don't do the shipping ports, and I refuse to haul even a roll of toilet paper for the government. So, I am in the clear.

Copperhead,

I was talking to a guy that owns a small fleet the other day, he seemed to think that gliders (new ones) were about to be no more. You hear anything like that?

Don't worry, it won't be long before the tier 4 delete kits will be available. I have already heard that some semi truck versions are already out.

Yeah delete kits are common in the "Over the Road" world. Factory Authorized shops are beginning to refuse to work on trucks so equipped. I assume that's pressure from the engine manufacturers. Give this another decade. The legal process will grow larger teeth. An example of what's coming for Commercial Transportation is E-Logs.
