Diesel fuel off-road vs hwy blends

Copperhead,

I was talking to a guy that owns a small fleet the other day, he seemed to think that gliders (new ones) were about to be no more. You hear anything like that?

The IRS finally caught up to the deal a couple of years ago, so now the exemption from Federal Excise Tax on new equipment was eliminated for glider trucks. The EPA is going to mandate that even new glider trucks (not currently on the road gliders), around 2021, will be mandated to have DPF systems on them. So the guy you were talking with is partially correct. That type of thing will be far easier to delete or circumvent than the new engine setups. There is no move to restrict any glider trucks that hit the road prior to the EPA thing. Only California has painted with a broad brush and demands that all commercial heavy trucks meet DPF requirements. I have not seen any evidence of a national move to take any currently operating diesel trucks off the road in the future. And given the time frame, and various political meanderings, even the EPA move might not come into full implementation. If one is in the mood to go the glider route, then jump on it. Then later when it comes time to get another truck, deal with the situation at the time. I was told all kinds of paranoia stories about getting a glider setup when I ordered. This has been one of the best commercial trucks I have ever owned. A true keeper if there ever was one. At 494,000 miles on the odometer, it has been the most reliable, most cost effective trucks I have ever owned in over 3 decades in the trucking game. And saving almost $40K on the initial buy compared to a similarly spec'd new emission truck was one of the best business moves I have ever made. The tax exemption was still in play when I bought mine.

Even with the tax exemption elimination for gliders, they are still the best value on the road. Far less cost to put to work and keep working. Hey! It's a business! Minimizing cost and downtime is where it is at!

I wanted to add, after working on this JD for the past few months, I will never put red diesel in anything of mine. Granted it only has caused problems because it sat for many years. If I wasn't mechanically inclined I would be out a few $K to get this thing running. Actually I am anyway, but it would have cost me at least an IP rebuild on top of the injectors I'm about to buy. Everyone I've talked to says red is fine just don't let it sit in equipment, if it would have been regular diesel, I wouldn't have so many issues. At least thats what I've been told.

Sorry you had so much trouble. I never use old fuel. I've never heard that red fuel doesn't store as well as clear?? I doubt that 10% of the farmers here treat their fuel when they park their equipment for the Winter. I'm sure it's all red fuel. Everything I own has red fuel in it except my pickup truck. Everything I own has treated fuel in it right now including the truck.

I agree. We have red ULSD in our farm tank and it only gets filled up twice a year. No problems with it, but we run power service in it.

I think its only a problem when it sits in equipment for a long while. I heard from a few guys that work on diesels that it will gum things up when it sits. How long it takes to do that, I'm not sure. I'm sure it takes more than a few months, maybe even a few years, but after 5+ years it will definitely make injectors and plungers in the IP stick real good.

I have news for you, IT IS NOT THE DYE.
Now, in some cases, the fuel is different. Lionoil apparently mixes their off road diesel with 5% bio and that could cause things to get gummed up if its cold (or it could break loose junk from over the years. Compare the MSDS sheets for them:
