When did official towing weight ratings begin?

Amish built aluminum car trailers. Now that's a good one. I thought that those folks didn't even use rubber tires and now they are cutting and welding aluminum plus adding tires?

That whole area around Elkhart, Indiana is very interesting. Literally dozens of RV and trailer factories with hundreds of support companies. There is a very large Amish community there. All the stores and factories have hitching posts and bike racks. Its nothing to see a hundreds of Amish people on bikes and in buggies on workday mornings going to the factories to work.

Nope. But I haven't been looking for a trailer for 15 years and that company is 13 years old. From this website, though, they are located about 1/2 hour from me...maybe 40 minutes.

Amish built? Well, there's a huge Amish community over there and that area is also the RV capitol of the world. All of those trailer/RV companies employ thousands of Amish people, and non-Amish as well. And it doesn't say anything about Amish on their "about us" page.

Anyhow, I'd go by owner reviews and see what you get.

It was 9 years ago when I started this thread and it was just when the economy started to tank...

Really liked the trailer... not the price... and then with the "Recession" it was easy to decide I really didn't need a new trailer...

My best friend/mentor growing up was from Indiana... he was plant superintendent and the best mechanic I have known.

I would wait for him to come home and he would walk over to my place to see what the kid was working on...

That's the problem, many people misunderstand. When I first went to get my 12K trailer inspected one place told me that anything over 10K was commercial in Virginia. My BIL is a country Doctor, he told me that the State of Mississippi was going to rule ALL duallies and trucks w/ a GVWR over 10K were going to have to be registered as commercial. That was 5 years ago.
Rumors abound.
Now in Mississippi all you have to do is take the title to the county clerk and register the vehicle. They don't inspect trailers or motor vehicles EXCEPT for dark window tints.

So you are saying that the drivers that could loose the ability to make a living by not complying with the rules and regulations regarding weights and cdl's are not to be trusted. Furthermore DOT officials who have received training on enforcement of the weight and registration laws don't know what they are talking about.

Right.

Most truck drivers have a Class A, so they don't really understand who doesn't need a CDL.

I have been given so much wrong information by the police about this stuff, I just think the majority don't care to understand.

The magic number for crossing state lines is 10,000 lbs. The Feds consider any towed vehicle with a GVW rating of over 10,000 lbs as commercial and requires some type of commercial drivers license.
