Jack Single barrel is awesome but sometimes hard to find. I also like Makers Mark and Woodford Reserve.

For you Fireball drinkers out there try Jack Fire. It is like fireball but way smoother and not as sweet. It's a great replacement for the pint of Hot **** while out ice fishing.

I
As a young police officer, I learned that the wine of choice among the street people (homeless alcoholics) was Thunderbird. I had occasion to taste it once and figured I'd just as soon drink kerosene. But in the late '60s or early '70s the wine of choice changed to MD 20-20. I don't know why it changed from the white Thunderbird to the red MD 20-20, but I've always wanted to taste MD 20-20; just not enough to buy a bottle, since I'm pretty sure I would not like it.

Townes Van Zandt did a talking blues number called "Talking Thunderbird."

One of the best single malt Scotch whiskey's imo is Laphroaig. You can taste the peat earth of the remote Scottish island of Islay, where it is made in the traditional way. Och aye.

A review I found which sums it up well:

"Imagine a primeval forest on fire, a massive moon towering over the inferno, the sparks surging towards the sky - now drink it. The aromatic smoke creeps out of the bottle like creeping black death, augmented by powerful peat and medicinal notes. The taste is surprisingly sweet for such an otherworldly (nether worldly?) liquid...I taste the notes of mango and citrus behind the fiery blasts of oily ash and burning tires. Swallowing it makes one second guess themselves as to whether it is poison or not - tons of ash, fire, burning forest, lit cigar and tangy peat course through the system, leaving a roaring bonfire in one's chest that lasts for several minutes. An unbelievable and unforgettable scotch. I've had Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Bowmore, and honestly, there's just nothing like this."

As another scotch drinking buddy of mine called after a fairly epic evening - The Frog. We were a lot younger then but it is still the most intensely peaty scotch in my cupboard, nothing else like it!

I once lived in Glasgow, Scotland, for a bit and my mates used to call it Leapfrog.

It seems we're all talking about the better, and more expensive stuff, but back in the early '70s when my friends and I drank more scotch, I bought Clan Macgregor. I think that was the cheapest scotch I could find.

Alright, now we're talking. Some whisky on the rocks mixed with Townes van Zandt. Take three glasses and two albums and that ought to clear that optimism right up.;)

Yup lol! But dang could he write a sad song!

Easily the worst hangover of my entire freaking life. That stuff had me begging for death the next morning! The thought still makes my stomach turn two decades later!

My goto when mixing is Rittenhouse (Bottled in bond).
Otherwise:
Westland
Makers Mark
Bulleit (Both the Bourbon and their Rye)
Buffalo Trace
Basil Haydens
Russel's Reserve
Grand Traverse Distillery (I'm a Michigan guy, home state props)
Wild Turkey 101
Woodford Reserve

You should be able to get most of those for pretty cheap ($20-$30 bottle) as far as whiskey goes if price is a concern. The Westland and Grand Traverse are a bit up there (nearing $70 I believe).

Still on my list to try:
Templeton
Whistle Pig
