Transmission Cases

there's a thread on this site somewhere where a guy busted the housing where the tow bar slides in.

Yeah I recall that thread too. I think the draw bar fell out part way while brush mowing. Wonder what would have happened to a cast unit under the same circumstance? Anyone willing to let a rotary cutter hit they're draw bar at full speed to find out?

Many years ago I had a lower arm bind up under load and pulled out a chunk from the iron casting on an International 460. A good old school welder brazed it back together and it never came apart again.

Yeah a lot depends on where the impact is and it can differ between two of the same tractors even. We had a Long tractor when I was a kid I was using it to clear brush and the box blade hooked a stump and cracked the rear housing. I'm not saying I'm pro or con aluminum housing I'm just saying they all can break.

I agree they can all break. Most of the failures I have had and have seen were due to operator error. I never seem to get stuck anymore and don't have much tear up either because I am more cautious than when I was a kid starting out. The large majority of equipment will hold up well if taken care of and used correctly.

Guess I'm not going to worry about it too much, talked to my insurance guy and he said if I hit something and break it, it's covered by my insurance.

If you hit something hard enough to break the axle, worry about the axle after you get out of the Hospital, if you do.

I do think the axle on the tractor is actually aluminum, it is the transmission housing that is aluminum.

eagle107, that was my earlier question....that was never answered....the Axle is steel versus the transmission housing that is aluminum....right?
