Sales Tax Savings

I live 80 miles south of NH where there is no sales tax.....don't think the thought of buying untraceable things up there has not crossed my mind. I think the trip would cost me 50.00 round trip in fuel. .. So anything over 900.00 would be a net savings.

Thank you to everyone making the use tax vs sales tax differentiation. I guess it is a moral/ethical dilema at this point since i am buying cash - it probably would not be traceable.

All cash transactions over 10k are required to be reported to the IRS. You are playing with fire IMO.

"buying cash" ....go buy it,..... pick it up,....enjoy it.
For those living in Vt. though, and buying equipment/machinery in Nh. it IS a risky situation.

If you buy anything online say Amazon you are supposed to report use tax in most all states. No matter how small, it just has to be 'material'. Just saying you should report all those online sales purchases from out of state. You should. Really. Seriously. Yep.

In Texas tax is collected by the internet seller if he has a brick and mortar store in the state. Otherwise no requirement. The definition of the tax is "State Sale"(s) Tax. Since the sale (seller took money and provided product) took place elsewhere they have no instate sale. With an instate brick and mortar the seller is infact an instate seller. Harbor Freight went without Texas taxing back when they had free shipping. But they started locating stores herein and as a result ANY sale from that business with an "anchor" in Texas is considered a Texas sale. So for a big item that would carry a large sales tax and shipping charges, just go to the brick and mortar, whip out your farm tax exemption, enjoy a trip to town and go home with your goods.

This is a free country right? Free to travel anywhere you want. Therefore a legal transaction in any state with or without a sales tax should be of no concern of your state. Would your state want sales tax if you made a purchase in a state that does have a sales tax, it's the same thing the way I see it.

I like your way of thinking.

On jumping the line, back when Texas had the blue laws (No Sunday Sales of any kind) folks up here would hop the river and buy in Okie land. Back when Texas was mostly dry, same thing. Beer joints within 100 yards of the river did a thriving business. Now that the Blue Law has been repealed and locals can vote on booze (which they all do), the joints across the river dried up.

You can always volunteer to pay taxes based on that low low invoice price. (It was used as is, was it not?)
That way you have met obligations. (pay cash not traceable check or MO)
Even many sellers would prefer to not admit to the higher sales price. (nothing prevents even a dealer to sell at a loss: ergo he has tax free cash for his toys)
Not that I'd ever do that. I like to support my gov't.

Lots of people in jail who thought it was..

Yep. Our jails are going be filled with Amazon shoppers. Let the handcuffing and arrests begin.
