escavadar chains and steering brakes are your best friend doing that kind of work in snow. I would not blame the chains for taking out the pinion. It is common practice and safeer to chain up a tractor to get some traction. Your diff-lock is another very important asset but be careful when you engage it. Do not engage it while a wheel is spinning or while you are turning !! Try to think ahead and engage it before you get to the tough spot.
