To the best of my knowledge the periodic table was expanded just a short while ago. Yes - new elements!

With sufficient scattered point sources of energy integrated into a functional grid individual lost sources do have the same impact as the loss of one major energy provider. Widely scattered energy sources will make for an easier managed grid and result in less transmission loss. Japan might be familiar with this. Of course the North American western Coast didn't see any fallout from Japan or did they?

Can't recall anyone here taking about the , pouge wasn't it, Carberator. Must have been the Merry Breezes carrying tales?

Perhaps the biggest problem lies in the grid ownership wanting a monopoly eh.

Coal burning plants have low "turn down" ratio. Depending on the type of coal and design of the boiler it can be anywhere between 10 to 30%. In other words the boiler can be operated between 90 and 105% without stabilization. As opposed to wind turbine that can be completely shut down and restarted within minutes. Provided that wind is blowing. If you spread wind generation over large area the availability and predictability of power significantly increases.
Needless to say that success of wind to lesser and PV to large degree depends on viable energy storage and management.

I should add that the country is lacking long distance energy transmission. Since there are four time zones the peak energy consumption is offset about an hour between adjacent time zones and four hours between east and west coast. Similar relationship is between north and south. In the summer north has long day while south is the hottest. So it would be advantageous to shift energy from area with excess capacity (north) to area with high demand (south). In example using DC lines.

There is no method to store the quantity of power to operate the US and Canada on solar plus wind. Unless the entire volume of the Great Lakes is used as pumped storage .
There are no chemical batteries or flywheels in a vacuum either to store that amount of energy.
Have you added up how many wind turbines will be required at 30% capacity factor? Where will these wind turbines be built ?
A power plant on spinning reserve ramps from 10% up to full load, not 90-105%.
Green energy is a wonderful fuzzy feeling and a feel good society for Socalists . The global warming cults like so called green power too. the $$$ disasters in Europe with over priced power is causing regrettes . Check what Demmark, Germany, the Netherlands etc are paying per Kw hr.

There is no practical way to transmitt that amount of power those distances . Even with DC transmission the construction costs, maintenance and losses in transmission makes such projects prohibitive.
The four time zones make no difference as the daytime peak runs 10-16hrs.
Green energy sounds great at a rally, meeting or on a news media bite to those outside the field . The harsh reality however is you had better be ready to pay over a $1 per KW hr. Of course to be "green" all home allowances and loads will have to be electric instead of gas or oil. Electric stove, electric fridge, electric water heater, electric furnace, electric clothes dryer . That would put daily energy consumption between 30-90Kw hr per day for a typical family. Who can afford those electrical bills ?

So, are those European Power Systems working?

What happened to that surplus power? Did it get lost?

By the way, what are those Greenies you keep mentioning?

To those who work with radiation or are familiar with it. The leakage off shore from Japan is very low level. Much less than naturally occurring uranium, radon, cession, strontium, and thorium in the soil and rocks under homes around the world. Granite counter tops that food is prepared on is considered nuclear waste at a generating station. So are alkaline batteries ,tungsten grinding wheels, smoke detectors and Coleman lantern mantles. The public are not concerned items with those "high levels" of radiation.
A banana from the grocery store is several orders of magnitude more energetic than what drifted onto the west coast of North America .
The Japanese reactor hydrogen explosions would not have occurred if operators and engineers had been able to do what was logical and vent.instead of bowing to emotional political decisions by officials and filling primary and secondary containment with a fuel air bomb.

What does your "new periodic table elements" supposed to mean?
Widely scattered energy sources are problem with both cost and reliability .
I do not understand what pouge, carberator, merry breezes and carrying tales means .
Transmission monopoly???

European power working by subsidizing wind and solar which cost more than conventional power.
Please post the cost per KW hr.
As previously stated more than once . Michigan and New York State utilities were paid to take the surplus power. The news info can be found with a Google search.
Greenies are those who insist on " green" at any cost of $$$ or practicality . Usually good people with well enough intentions who have been scared for their children's future by "environmental groups". However they don't grasp the logistics of power generation and distribution.

Surplus energy, means something is working.

Periodic table of elements, you should know as you keep referring to it.

How do you know the Greenies don't understand electrical power and its generation?

Power generation points at many different points make for a more stable production rate, lowers transmision costs, makes control of the grid much easier and the grid power sources may not be subjected to localized mishap.

Your saying Japan's little misshap was human error and of little consequences.

Seems you were talking about this were you not?

Before somebody goes running to you know who about being demeaned , insulted or something . Somebody who does not know what surplus generation is, they are not familiar enough with power generation and distribution .
I have explained it before but I will try again.
On nights and weekends in particular spring and fall when demand is lowest. When hydro electric production is at peak from spring melt or fall rains. Plus nuclear does not load follow, the reactor when at 100% power is best left at 100% power until the next maintenance shutdown. The power generated can exceed the power demand on the utility grid .
Now add producers with contracts that they can sell power at any time for a guarantied subsidized rate . Hydro electric and nuclear will be paid zero per KW hr due to supply exceeding demand. Wind at the very same instant is being paid 13.5 cents, gas turbines 16.5 cents and solar between 39.5 to 80.2 cents .
The power has to go somewhere . Thus NY and Michigan are PAID to take the surplus power.
There is no feasable method to store the surplus power.
