B&D:

So is it the financial or physical/Mechanical aspect that does not work. Seeing that there is surplus it would seem the physical/mechanical side does work.

Any chance the grid system is old and cobbled up network that mostly needs replacement. Think it also has a lot of equipment that is also out of date.

On a recent drive across the American Midwest there seemed to be wind generators spread all along the route. Having power sources at single points must lead to costlier transmission to distant site one would think.

Only in NDP & conservative ridings eh! On the road to Halifax Town this morning I looked up and bejabbers there be some of them turbine generators right smack dab in a Liberal riding both Federal and Provincial. So be of good cheer, the ridings you were complaining of may Be Liberal in your lifetime!

That's something to see. We were there last summer again. Too commercialized now, but still something everyone should see at least once in their life.

I seen them just about fifty years ago.

Speaking of land communication lines any chance of them going away in the future??

Now an aside for B&D.
Subsidies for power generation. Any of the folks that own the lines and plants get any breaks when they built. Any breaks on their fuel? Then there are the Hydro plants using our water resources. Course the wind and sun would also be considered as resources. Any mention of cleanup or damages caused by stack effluent.

Egon Thanks for the link should be read by everyone that thinks.
Also the John Galt engine has ran for 60 years on less than a drop of ink. Edison thought dc power was the way to go except unable to control the generators so it caused large changes in voltage.
Those advancing ac were brow beat to even think different except it worked as designed.
Telsa liked to think power could be transmitted to large areas like todays tv

another generation of people will start to agree Nuclear power still has the best idea.
long lasting between shutdowns and should be cheap except the gov. requires a observer with clipboard writing down every scratch the employee makes.

Tesla was an interesting individual with many an invention to his name. He also had a lot of firsts like wireless transmission. Every so often I read about him but there's so much with a lot being of the non substantiated variety it's difficult for folk like me to understand.

Yes, very good chance. They are getting old and its too costly to repair them VS abandoning them and forcing everyone to cell. There aren't enough paying land-line customers to support infrastructure repairs and replacement. It will be cheaper to build towers in grid pattern than to replace all the copper lines.

Speaking of Tesla and Niagara Falls....
Niagara Falls and Nikola Tesla

That is a lot of money , to change so little, and feel that good about it. Makes for good conversation and hero status at parties for saving the world to those who don't understand the numbers.
Who thinks that the utility switched some wires to make your house green?
I have a story to tell about that some time .
I not surprised you would disparage my efforts. I didn't mention that i do a fair amount of volunteer work in the community, so you can pat yourself on the back and feel superior about that too. Also not surprise you wouldn't understand how a power company could purchase power from different sources with out having to unplug wires to plug into a different provider. Oh please, do tell me a story.

Speaking about subsidizing wind and solar. We are connected to small rural electric coop (In fact we are share holders). Since we are rural we have relatively expensive infrastructure per electric meter. Based on annual report the coop spends about $70-80 per meter per month for infrastructure maintenance and running the operation. I also know that there are many homes that have electric bill less than 80/month. So they are subsidized by people using more power. Shouldn't they be penalized because they heat with wood? The coop doesn't generate any power but buys it at approximately 3.5 cent/kWh and selling it for 11.3 cent/kWh. It should charge $80 month for infrastructure and 3.5 cent for power.
For some reason the management is hostile to alternative energy sources. No net metering is offered and in addition if you install PV they will cancel discounted rate for your electric heating. We generate about 30% more energy that we use but still have in average $177/month electric bill. So in fact we (our PV) are subsidizing those who use little electric power.

One of the big Iowa utilities generates about 50% of energy from wind. It is evidently profitable while it charges about 8 cent/kWh. BTW Berkshire Hathaway is the biggest shareholder of it.

Rural riding , not a suburban or urban riding .
