Loader Flipped my L48 Kubota

I flipped my little Steiner last summer. Yes, it's a very stressfull experience. Despite getting the thing shut off quite quickly, it was amazing how disorienting it is, just finding the key.

Hope repairs and downtime arn't too expensive.

My Kubota loader actually has the key operated fuel solenoid, plus an old school, emergency pull to shut off knob which is kind of nice to know.

Mine too (1999 3710) only problem is if you lay your tractor on its side it will ingest its own sump oil and voila, you have a run away........

Did compression test, and as i thought. Good compression all cylinders except last one. Pulled intake manifold and made sure cylinder was top center so valves were closed and poured some more water into radiator. Water came out last glow plug hole and no where else. So i drained and pulled head again and found the hole. It his deep inside the air mixture chamber between the water water chamber and air chamber. Highly doubt any body can get in there to weld it, so it is looking like a new head. HEAD.jpg

Sorry to hear about your bad luck on this one Drivewayman! I didn't even know of this possibility happening with a diesel. For what it's worth this is probably the most interesting thread I've read on TBN.

Hope your back in action soon.

Sorry for your luck. :(

I admire your disipline in finding the problem.

Have you come up with a plan?

Look for a used head/engine?

Buy a bare bones casting or try to source a complete head?

Some Kubota engines are used in stationary applications and may have another source.

Kumar bros. has new bare head (with guides and seats) for $474 shipped P/N 1g851-03040, 42. We've had good luck with their parts.

The wealth of information and willingness to help is what keeps me coming back to TBN

Agree it's time for the new head. I missed it (somewhere in this thread probably) but how on earth does flipping a machine over result in a new water path internal to the head on the engine !!?? I don't understand the mode of failure.

The original post described a severe over-revving event with likely destructive combustion pressures and mechanical overload. The engine was stopped before multiple failures happened. But at one spot in the head combustion pressure broke an internal web to a water passage. The tough thing is that there could be other parts that got over-stressed and may not hold up after this. No real way to tell without putting it back together and running it.

In ref to the CO2 extinguishers...
This is BRILLIANT! I was a mechanic in the army and a common task was setting up the pump and governor on diesels. It happened a lot. We kept a clipboard handy to shove over the air intake.
Buddy once tried to stuff a rag over it but it promptly sucked it in went through the turbo and spit it out like feathers flying from the exhaust pipe.

This is a good tip for all to remember about the CO2 extinguisher. Many years back I responded (Firefighter) to a semi on its side into a guard rail. We could not get into the drivers seat area as the guardrail had crushed the cab over the driver. The engine was still running and the drive axle was still rotating with the tires squalling on the pavement. One quick shot of CO2 into the intake and it immediately went silent.
