How to deter coyotes

I was thinking of putting in a small pasture in the spring and getting a few mini donkeys. I know they'll run coyotes off but I don't want them stomping my German Shepherd. He's pretty curious and will most likely go into the pasture to check them out. Maybe if I got young ones and they grew up with my dog, they would get along fine...

Well folks;I have been around coyotes my whole life;we have lots in Northern NY.You very seldom "see" them;so just because you are not seeing them doesn't mean that they are not around.
I probably spent 200+hours last fall sitting in tree stand hunting deer and only saw three coyotes, heard them at dark about every day.
Local coyote hunters that run Fox hounds kill about 50 a year in our area.
I raise Pheasant and have out side pens;electric fence does wonders for ground predators;I supplement with Have a heart Type traps and leg holds.
Solar powered/motion detector type lights may also help.
I also have some Night Guard lights but don't believe them to be effective.I have trapped all kinds of ground predators right next to them.

I go for a walk after it rains and I see their tracks in the mud. It's the best way that I have found to monitor their activity, and how close they are getting to my house and livestock.

I read just the other day that coyotes are not native to Georgia, my home state. Nor Florida, etc., not native to the southeast. I know when I was young, coyotes were only a wild west crit. The article I read said that the very wise game biologists (same brand that brought in kudzu, carp, hydrilla, congon grass, etc.) thought it would be good to bring coyotes in back in the '70s, I think it was. Case closed. Knuckahaided coyotes everywhere now! They need killin' around here. Indiscriminately.

A very important point to consider, is that if you are not out hunting and killing the local coyotes, you can expect their fear of you to sink to the levels shown in the video posted by Moss. If they are being wary, it suggests that there is someone in the area who is reminding them not to show themselves in daylight or in a lit area at night.

The mere fact that it is daytime, or that you have a night light is no guarantee that the coyotes and other predators will not learn that you pose no threat to them or are not paying attention.

The OP is well advised to spend a little time doing observation just before dawn to see if there really is any activity and be ready to take a shot at any who show up.

And here's a student coyote having lunch on the quad....

that dogs showin signs of mange... once that hits they have to eat three times as much a day and the care for humans really goes down the drain
