Lots of good advice above.
My house is 1/4 mile off the road and there are no homes within 1/2 mile in 3 directions around me. Yet, coyotes don't alter their path one bit if they want to cross through, and will come within a few feet of my house rather than circle around it. I've seen them slowly trot across my front yard during the day, while they stared straight at me watching from the window. At various times during the year, coyotes and red fox both have multiple 'scent post' markers around my property. My dog marks them daily, and the coyote and fox do the same. They are in a territory battle. They visit areas we camp on the property, regardless of all sorts of our scent, including urine. A few years ago a red fox was watching our house daily. I could see from his tracks in the snow that he circled the house and sat in the yard observing at night. Then he urinated on the front porch in a drift of snow. My dog retaliated with the same. After a couple turns from each, the fox ended the battle with a dump on my front porch. He didn't return the rest of that winter. These canines are much more bold than people realize.
