Why are deck over trailers (usually) only rated for 10k?

Yes you are legal. Don't know what you are hauling but be prepared to defend yourself if stopped by the DOT and they might think it is for business use. For example if your trailer has a skid steer and a bunch of tools are in your suburban it is going to be hard to convince them you are not traveling for work. If you have a trailer full of ATV's and the family in the burban it is pretty obvious it is a recreational trip.

I used to not have DOT numbers back in 2008 or so. I was in a 3/4 ton pulling a 7k rated 12' enclosed trailer with my equipment for work out of Oklahoma into Texas. The DOT was sitting at the river and pulled me over. First thing he asked was for my medical card and logbook. I had no idea what he was talking about. They print the tickets out on paper like a cash register receipt and mine was about 3 feet long.

I am not 100% positive on this but I think even if you are traveling through a state that requires a CDL for over 10k trailers you are ok if you are legal in your home state. For example in Texas you have to be 16 to get a drivers license but in new mexico you can get one at 15. IF you are 15 and live in and have a valid license in NM you can drive in Texas if traveling through. Same with window tint. NM allows darker tint than Texas. If you are legal in your home state you can drive in others. Where it gets tricky is if it is not for personal use and is commercial. Then the interstate commerce laws kick in.

I thank you for your answer.
I will be taking my Ford 3400 TLB to my cottage for the summer, and the Suburban WILL be full of tools.
I am 75 years old though, so I think I can explain that I am not going to work.
My only other issue might be that the last part of my trip will be 60 miles into Canada.
I assume that Canada would honor USA rules.
If not,..... I am 75 years old,..... so I will do it anyway.

I can't even describe how much I like that answer. I may not be 75 yet but I am not that far away and I really appreciate the thought and concept of what you say. Canada well I don't know about that one.

I dear friend of mine in her 80's still would drive her 1930 Model A Coupe in town... she bought the car in 1934 for $150

It was an experience riding with her...

She loved to drive through the park where a toll was charged... she would just drive past the toll both and wave...

Downtown there was a section of reserved city parking and she always would park there...

Every year there were local car shows where she would just show up and they would make room for her... never registered or paid an entry fee... she said she just wanted the best parking spot.

Nothing ever came of it... she just led a charmed life and her little Black Model A Coupe with a smile and a wave and all was good.

That is when I learned age does have it's privileges...

Every time one of these threads come up it gets me to thinking... mostly because I don't like not knowing and want do things right.

With the new f250 Diesel coming soon I should actually be able to move my Deere 110 around on my 9980 PJ trailer...

Of course this is not commercial or business... and never has been... not sure how I would prove a negative as was already stated...

I could really use the 110 in Olympia... which means traveling from California, through Oregon and then into Washington....

Never had so much as a parking ticket in my life and wouldn't be to happy getting in hot water towing my TLB between homes.

If you trailer is a 9900 gvwr you'll be over weight with a 110. My 110 with hoe weighs 8k. 9900 includes the trailer weight which will be at least 3500-4000 lbs.

I don't doubt it... things are always heavier than I think.

The trailer and the 110 were sold new as a package... the trailer is derated from 12k to 9990 for California... it has two 6k axles and properly rated tires.

The Dealer said with the front and rear buckets off it comes in just under 10k... I have never weighed it or towed it as my Sliverado 1500 is not enough truck to even chance it on the steep hills around the SF Bay Area.

The guy that bought it new towed it all around with a Dodge 1 ton dually flatbed and when he had to... strapped down the buckets on the flatbed.

He wanted as big a TLB as he could without getting into problems towing.

that seems heavy for a 10K trailer, my 10K is a car hauler type, built fairly heavy and it weighs 2600. my 27ft GN is not the lightest nor heaviest build and it weighs 4600. don't forget with a 10K load you'll want ~10% on the tongue so only 9K will be on the ball

"10% on the tongue so only 9K will be on the ball" ?
Am I missing something here?

I'm not pulling around that kind of weight with no safety margin. Things go bad fast when pushing the envelope. 2600 is pretty light have you actually weighed it or is that the published weigh?
