Looking at simpson strongtie web page, I don't see where their nails are any different in terms of shear strength. They have tables for each hanger showing size and number of nails to use. They do have derating tables, if a hanger calls for 16D common and you use 10D N10 nails (1 1/2") then you have to derate the hanger to .64, as one example. In no circumstance can you use 1 1/2" nails for the angled nails, which they refer to as the shear nails.

I'm starting to think about where we are going to want outlets, switches, hose bibs, lights, etc. Does anyone have suggestions for locations outside of what code dictates?

I prefer more than minimum. Lots of 3 ways. My outdoor lights have at least 2 switches each.
I also put overhead lights and fan in each room, switched. Some will just do a switched outlet.. Also i run all lights on seperate circuit from the outlets. Outlets each end of couch locations and both sides of bed locations.

I really wish I had added additional switches for my exterior lights be the kitchen sink. I often find I stand at the sink after dinner doing the dishes and notice I forgot the outside lights on on the garage. I also wish I had installed a sub panel In my garage. It would have saved time when wiring and made adding additional outlets, such as the one I have to add for my welder, easier.
I would also suggest, unless doing a whole home generator, to add a small generator panel for essential circuits. They are so cheap to install when doing the initial wiring of the home, maybe an additional $100. Even if you don't have or want a generator, you never know what the future brings and it is nice to have to option of safely and legally plugging in a generator to power your water, furnace, fridge and sump pump etc.

We installed lever door knobs thru out. Makes it easier for everyone to use, especially if your hands are full or dirty.
Amen to that. Love our front door lever handle. I can open with my knee if really have too. Sometimes both hands are full and my first urgent stop is the bathroom!

I visited the Terra Cotta soldier in Xi'an China. Indeed a wonder of the world. I don't have a picture handy as I'm traveling again, but I fell in love with them so much that I bought and shipped a replica home to guard my house while I'm away. He scares the heck out of unsuspecting delivery folk!

Eddie,

There is a header - you can't see it in the photo. Also - the flooring is tounge and groove osb and each piece is pretty tight.
Exciting times for sure! Thank Eddie for being a valuable resource. Just finishing reading this thread and enjoying following along now. Didn't look and especially examine all the pics you posted but I'm still puzzled on the header or lack thereof in the picture of what appears to be a sliding glass door opening. That is wrong in my book. You say it is there but you just can't see it. :confused3:

I misunderstood what Eddie was asking. Looks like the header is definately missing. That's interesting because they have headers over the other windows and doors. That sliding patio door opens up to a covered patio. Do all doors and windows require headers?

I would just get a panel that can support a generator interlock and run at least a 10 gauge wire (with 2 hots, a neutral and a ground) to an empty box by the garage or behind the house.
Then you can run anything in the house and just turn off the stuff that is unneeded.
