The 2x2 is a bearing surface. The bearing surface has to have enough wood fibre structure to prevent crushing.

The notch is within spec, so is the bearing surface.

It's the beam that the 2x2 is attached that has to hold the weight. The ability of the 2x2 to support and transfer weight to the beam is through the fasteners used to fasten the 2x2 to the beam.

Then you add the toe nails of the floor joists to the beam and consider the ability of those fastens to withstand shear forces.

I think the engineers, contractors, framers and inspectors probably have it figured out.

Again, just because we haven't seen it done.or done it, doesn't mean it is not as good or better than methods we have used.

The wife and I did a rough layout of where we want electric outlets. The big question is how to get outlets in the living room. I believe floor outlets are the only option. We will likely have wood floors. Is there any subtle way to install in floor outlets? Everything I've seen looks a little tacky.

The wife says that outlets aren't necessary, but I just dot agree. I need to have my computer and phone charging while I'm in the lazy boy!!

Red dots represent outlets and blue circles are water spigots.

Add a outlet in the center ceiling in the garage for electric garage door opener.

Master bedroom you missed a wall. NEC says receptacles must be no more than 6 feet from a doorway and no more than 12 feet apart along a wall.

Consider moving the water spigot from the left side of the garage to the right to make the plumbing run more economical. As it is it is quite a distance from any other plumbing. Might not be a big deal where you are at but in Michigan, there would be an issue of keeping that line from freezing. But where you are, probably not a problem.

Regarding outlets in the living room floor, I've seen some nice brass outlet covers that you can cover the entire outlet, flush with the floor. But if you don't have furniture placed nearby, it can be awkward in practice to use. It would be a tough call for me whether to do it or not. For me it would depend on a good furniture plan. But furniture placement changes. When in doubt, the wife wins.

An alternative to charging phones, tablets and maybe even laptops are external battery packs. I bought one to charge my tablet for a long flight to Hawaii. Fits in a shirt pocket.

I think he was just marking outlets he wanted in addition to what code requires. Maybe I am wrong but that's how I read it.

Nope -you are spot on. We didn't mark areas that would require plugs by necessity. Builder is already going to install outlets to code - this is just to make sure that we get extra outlets where it makes sense for us.
