He was definitely overloaded. A CDL and a license plate with a 40k stamp doesn't make a truck tow more.

Is that DiamondPilot?

The max 5th/goose towing capacity listed for a 2015 F-350 possible is 25,100 with a 2 wheel drive regular cab dually. I haven't seen too many of those on the road the 4WD and super/ crew cabs are rated for less.

The Superduties that are in the 30k range are the 450's and up.
It's been 2016 for a while now.
Tow capacity of 2016 F350 w/ diesel is up to 26,500, GCWR up to 35,000 2016 Ford Super Duty | View Towing Specifications | Ford.com
And that's DRW/CC/4x4 and a 4.3 axle.

The max gooseneck towing capacity for a 16 F-350 is still the 2WD reg cab and has been upped 200lbs to 25,300 Unless you get the 4.30 gears you mention in a crew cab 4x4 then it is 26,500.
<snip>

Yup, better package for towing allows you to tow more. Why were you limiting the F350 to a lower gear ratio?

Quite honestly because I missed it. There is only one F350 offered with the 4.30. Take a quick glance at the chart and you can miss it. They don't offer the 4.30s in the 2WD or reg cab.

Either way it doesn't matter much that backhoe dang near weighs that much by itself not counting the trailer needed to haul it.

Don't know if anyone is familiar with Highway 49... it is the old Gold Rush highway between gold camps and is steep and very winding... some places extreme and most 2 lane...

If going anywhere... need to double the time because the road requires it.

I bought my JD 350c nearby... When I was thinking how I would get it home... the owner offered to deliver... he too had a F350 with aftermarket jake brake, chipped and a heavy duty trailer...

The 350c is 10 to 12 k and so it was still quite a load...

I don't know about other states, but in PA you CANNOT register a truck for more than what the factory numbers are. It doesn't matter what you are wiling to pay or what you think it can haul, the published numbers are the max. My notary that I went through for my International had to have a sworn statement by a licensed mechanic to certify it at what I wanted. I just joked with her about my old pickup and she said that they just look the numbers up and that's it. No questions asked. About the only thing you could do is say you have a deeper gear ratio than what you do.

I'll agree that the idiot towing that load should be brought up on charges. Maybe not murder, but manslaughter would def be on the table. There is no justification for a 1 ton truck pulling that load when he was at least 10,000lbs over his max GCWR. Farm plates or not doesn't excuse it LD.

I used to tow about a 1klbs over weight or so (I don't know for sure, just going off some estimated weights) and even with a properly sized trailer, the truck wasn't any fun to drive. I always took extra time and left more than enough room for stopping. I even tried avoiding overly steep roads or tight intersections to try and make things easier. When I got a big enough truck, towing the same load (and more) on the same trailer was no sweat. I actually have to look in the mirrors now to remind myself that the trailer is behind me instead of thinking this trailer is going to kill me if I don't plan ahead enough. Personally, without a fail safe braking mechanism I don't see how these pickups can keep pushing the weight limits that they are. I don't think a puny exhaust brake on a 7ish liter engine is nearly enough snot to stop 40k+lb plus load.

Like I said, I am not trying to defend the guy. Just trying to point out some of the things that always seem to come up in the "do I need a CDL threads"

Wonder where all those guys are?

Like for example.....one of the topics always brought up is the fact that trucks door stickers only list GAWR (front), GAWR (rear) and GVWR. But the door sticker dont list a GCWR. And MANY MANY times I have heard (seen written) that the tow capacities and GCWR are just "recommendations" and NOT what the DOT uses to enforce.

And that the DOT looks at axle capacities, and tire capacities. If all are within rating, the "rig" is legal.

And its easy to say that a far exemption is "no excuse", but in the eyes of the law...it most certainly is. I see 3/4 ton trucks pulling 350-400 bushel grain buggies all the time. Sometimes two of them back there (allthough I doubt if pulling two they would be loaded). Certainly well over any tow capacity. And them old 4-wheel buggies dont have breaks. And then the RV'ers.

It seems the difference between being "legal" or not has nothing at all to do with safety. And all about revenue.

No, but we tow them bigger than that. I would guess that boat on the trailer to be about 15,000#.

All of the brakes wouldn't have to have failed. Just loosing trailer brakes with that combo and your toast. Especially since he didn't downshift.

I simply can't agree.

I agree that you won't get stopped with that rig on a grade, with no trailer brakes at speed, but truck brakes alone should at LEAST keep you from SPEEDING up ...

some part of this we aren't hearing...
