Newer trucks are autos and they'll won't let you damage the vehicle. If you try to shift too low, the computer won't give you the gear and if the engine starts to over rev in the current gear it will force a up shift. If you have an older vehicle you could always catch a low gear, shut the ignition off and then rotate the switch back to run so the wheel isn't locked. After that, I'd grind the rig into a guardrail.

Exactly.

I drive an older truck.. had no idea the new ones were that hands off now...

but yeah.. i'd find me some drag before I went express elevator to he[[.

No mystery. Not enuf impeding force to fight gravity. He had some options, but even exercising all of them may not have been enuf since he was already at speed.

yes.. it IS a mystery.

why did he loose ALL brakes. truck hyd, e-brake and trailer brakes.

Not trying to make excuses or trying to say the driver did no wrong here. 18 wheelers suffer brake failure, run away, overturn, etc as well. I will hold out quick judgment till ALL the facts are known

I agree. we have not seen all the details yet.

Like I said, I am not trying to defend the guy. Just trying to point out some of the things that always seem to come up in the "do I need a CDL threads"

Wonder where all those guys are?

It seems the difference between being "legal" or not has nothing at all to do with safety. And all about revenue.

Correct.

Florida, for instance, allows you to 'up' register ( or down too ), your tags.

Simple, a broken wire or a bad connection lost the trailer brakes OR they over heated and that's all she wrote. The E-brake on that load is useless, the hydraulic brakes on the truck wouldn't be long for this world without the trailer brakes. OTR trucks use secondary systems to decel and not the service brakes. IE Jake brakes. If the jake isn't enough, then the service brakes are used. If there is no air to hold the parking brakes off, they close and that's automatic. If a wire brakes or doesn't send voltage correctly, the tires free wheel.

One of the reasons we went away from an F Series truck and gooseneck trailer, is that it just did not have the braking performance for the rated load. And we were only at 21,000 lbs total trailer weight, with six electric drum brakes. Always had to be careful with that truck.

I'm well aware of how large truck air brakes and engine brakes work, and none of that applies here.

Just seems like a super rare event of multiple system failure.. or we aren't hearing something...

I looked for additional information or pictures... so far all the news reports are a rehash of the same story... no pictures which also seems unusual.

Did say the truck/trailer/tractor were impounded for investigation by the CHP and the driver was not detained...

One scenario I can see happening is the alternator/battery/wire/terminal failed. The shutoff solenoid killed fuel to engine and truck was left with no electrical power to run trailer brakes and no hydraulic power to run truck brakes.

yup, no hydroboost or electric.
