Backhoe Attaching a Backhoe to the 3-Point Hitch

   / Attaching a Backhoe to the 3-Point Hitch #41
My Mahindra dealer only offers a 3-point hitch backhoe. When I asked him about sub-frame mounted BH, he said that was only for the small tractors and that the 5555 was stronger and had a sub-frame already. There are frame rails underneath it. In my search for a BH, I could find no sub-frame mounted backhoes for my Mahindra.

The mahindra backhoe for your 5555 is either the 75B or 85B (if your 5555 is 4WD, none for 2WD) I'd be concerned with a dealer that doesn't know the OEM attachments or doesn't know that a 3pt backhoe voids the warranty.

My dealer does not promote OEM attachments. He believes they cost more than his customers are willing to pay. I forget what brand backhoe he suggested or how much it cost and I may regret it but the 8500 Woodmax delivered with hydraulic thumb and ripper was $6,000. An 85B with hydraulic thumb and no ripper lists for more than $13,000 on the Mahindra website.

Haven't used it yet. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Re: Attaching a Backhoe to the 3-Point Hitch on a Mahindra 5555

We bought a WoodMaxx 8600 that attaches to the 3-point hitch on our Mahindra 5555. The WoodMaxx looks like a good value for the money but I have a question about hooking it up. An adjustable bar is provided to replace the top link, but the mounting hole in the bar is smaller than the pin in the mounting bracket on the Mahindra. WoodMaxx suggested using bushings on the tractor. I was thinking about having the hole on the bar machined larger.

A second problem is the draft linkage. I do not want to attach the backhoe to the bracket that regulates the draft. Seems to me that would tear it up. The bracket on the tractor to which the draft linkage is affixed looks far stronger. Removing the draft link however looks like a pain. How do you experienced tractor backhoe operators do it?

I see this thread is wandering all over the place so lets get it back in line with your questions.

First off, I'm buying the big Wood Max 86 or 9600 3 point backhoe to mount on my M9000 Kubota, which, I presume is quite a bit bigger than your Mahindra (don't think I've ever seen one actually) but thats neither here nor there.

Couple things you need to adhere to. One thing is never attempt to pick up the arse end of the tractor with a 3 point hitch backhoe, it puts was too much strain on the transmission case. Just set your outriggers down firmly and set down the FEL bucket and dig. When you want to move, move the tractor with the tractor, never the hoe.

I don't even recommend horsing a tractor with a sub frame mounted hoe, it's bad business.

Secondly, disable the draft linkage by removing the link between the rocker section and the control valve on the transmission. On my Kubota, the draft sensing linkage is pinned to the rocker. Removing the pin and pulling the linkage out of the bushing renders it inoperative. When you pin the upper mount to the rocker, use the upper hole. That limits any movement in the rocker.

I can understand why posters cannot answer that question, most all compact tractors don't have draft control.... Not enough balls for ground engaging implements anyway, I farm with my tractors, chisel plow, disc so I use draft control all the time. All draft control does it pull the implement up when it senses a heavier load than you set. Position control (like most little tractors have, does nothing. It can't sense anything and most little tractors, like I said don't do ground work.

Bottom line is, don't expect the unit to work like a dedicated construction hoe. It won't and you'll break something, most likely your transmission case. It's for light ground work only. digging ditches, landscaping and light work. It won't pull out tree stumps and it won't move itself around...well it will but you'll break something.

Used wisely and cautiously, it will work just as well as a subframe hoe will. My last hoe was a subframe Kubota I sold with that tractor long ago.

I would not change the hole diameter in the top link, if anything, I'd source another link from a solid steel bar and have it drilled (by a machine shop) to fit. I plan on changing their top mount to just that. I own a machine and fabrication shop so thats nothing for me to make.

If you have any questions PM me and I'll try to answer them.

Re: Attaching a Backhoe to the 3-Point Hitch on a Mahindra 5555

Additionally, warranty is of no concern to me. Both of my large frame Kubota's are almost 10 now and have accured thousands of hours. In fact, my M9 just turned 3500 hours. Never have had issue one excepting normal things like new tires and of course filters and oil.

I know I can go out in below zero weather and cold start the M9 with a little pre heat and let it warm up and go put out round bales for the livestock...did that yesterday and it was 10 degrees in the barn.

I'm into working tractors not garage queens.

Thank you 5030.

Of course you're free to use the 3 point backhoe. I would get something in writing that your dealer will honor the Mahindra warranty that will be voided if anything breaks while using it. This has been discussed before and pointed out that Mahindra specifically states "3 point backhoes" in its list of items that void the warranty. I might try it on my 1985 DB885, but I won't be doing it on my 2014 4025.

BTW, Kubota also voids for "unapproved attachments".

If that was the case I voided my warranties immediately on 2 large frame Kubota tractors that together cost over 120 grand. I think that is 110% Internet phooey. Now if you can substantiate that with a link or something printed somewhere, I might buy it but until then.... far as I'm concerned your are FOS.
