Hope I got the right picture. How thick are the rafters going over your living attic space? How do you plan to insulate the ceiling in this space?

One of the big mistakes people make is they expect fiberglass bat insulation for the ceiling insulation to work with only 5 1/2 inches of thickness. R19 is all you will get if those are 2x6's. In my part of the country, R30 used to be the standard years ago, but now it's R60 for ceilings.

Eddie,

Without spray insulation how can you even get close to 60?

Closed cell spray will give you the most R value in the smallest space, but I don't think it will get there in 5 1/2 inches. For blown in insulation like Atticat, it's 22 inches thick to get that rating. I always shoot for 2 feet just to make sure. It's cheap to add a few more bags to get the most out of it you can.

On my garden kitchen project, I had 2x6's on the lean to roof. I doubled them up with another layer of 2x6's to get 11 inches of space for the insulation along with the 1 1/2 inches of space for the purlins. I went with a layer of R30 fiberglass batts, then a layer of R19 fiberglass to get a grand total of R49. It's the best I could come up with. My side walls are now 7 1/2 feet tall instead of 8 feet. For me, losing that six inches of ceiling height at the side walls was more then worth the added R value in the ceiling!!! I raised the ceiling so the overall effect when you are in there is of an open space.

Have to agree with Eddie, you want all the R's you can get up there, and space for circulation.

Around here so many folks built cathedral ceilings with minimal or occasionally no insulation that converting from recreational usage to full time retirement homes became a specialty.
Many change over houses now have 'double' roofs simply to accommodate the required insulation.
Not only does it save energy costs but the shingles last almost twice as long.

Also you want a well sealed vapor barrier on the warm side of any insulation.

Here ladder gables are the norm. Only time you see cantilever gables is if over a ft out from the house.

I don't have enough experience with closed cell spray foam to have any credibility to it's application. I helped put a roof on with 2x12's last summer & the carpenter I was helping said that's all that was needed and when I checked it out after the insulation was applied I'd say there was about 10" and R 60 is the rule here as well. With it they said vapor barrier was not necessary. This is the only time I've seen it in ceilings sprayed directly to the under side of the roof.
