How old when you got your first wheels... car or pickup?

I only had it for about four months and sold it for double what I paid (1966). Next car I got was a Hillman Minx Station Wagon - don't remember the year but think it was mid 50's. Next car was an 1959 Holden FC (same as the Chevy), straight six with three speeds on the steering column and vacuum operated windshield wipers - ugh!

Oh boy... That SS 396... That could move, eh?
Mine was about worn out when I got it. Rode hard, put up wet. But compared to 80's iron it was pretty fast. To make matters worse as dealers were clearing out stock - I could have bought a crate LS7 454 for $1900 and probably got killed. With that engine, it would still be considered pretty quick.

I have looked in to this several times over the years, and mine is not one of the more valuable models.

OK. I didn't know if you knew. Didn't want you to miss out on a fortune.:)

I was 17, and (in 1957) my first car was a 1934 Ford 4 dr. flat head V-8, with suicide doors ($50).
My dad bought a new Hillman Minx Wagon for his work. It was not a great car, and we referred to it as a Hillman Stinx!

I started driving with a permit and my folks when I turned 15. We had a VW bus 4 on the floor and a '70 Nova 3 on the tree. My dad taught me to drive stick in the cemeteries next to our house. I took out a shrub first time out! Anyhow, I got pretty good, took driver's ed, passed with a waiver (no driving test required) and had my license at 16 plus a month and a day (stupid Indiana laws back then). I got to drive either of my folks' cars pretty much any time I wanted, but I had to pay for insurance and gas. The first vehicle I actually owned was a Yamaha DT250 Enduro exactly like this one below when I turned 18. Bought it from my brother-in-law for a few hundred bucks.

Drove it for about a year and realized I wanted a street bike, so I sold that and bought a '77 Yamaha RD400.

Eventually I purchased my father's '70 Nova when it died on him with about 140,000 miles. That was my first car. I think I was 18 or 19. It had the 3 on the tree, and a 230 straight 6 with blown head gasket. I stripped it down, had it bored out .60 over, balanced, put in some stupid cam, 4 barrel and headers, and promptly blew up the 3spd. So I put in a 4 spd with a floor shifter. It still had bench seats. So I had to keep the seat all the way back or I couldn't use 2nd or 4th gears! Car was stupid fast after that. It would do 112 pretty quickly. Anyhow, it eventually rusted to the ground and the springs rotted off the frames. It was time for it to go. My mom and I walked up to it in the driveway and we pulled the back bumper off with our hands! We used a torch, and cut it up and put it out with the trash... not the bumper, the entire car! I moved the engine to a '71 Toyota Landcruiser, where it still sits today, in storage, waiting a revival. I also saved the Nova's hood. Its sentimental. :)

This would be cool to see pics of.

Its in a storage shed that I plan to empty and bring everything home this summer (just like that last 15 summers!). If I do, I'll get pics. I have a metal body, two metal firewalls, a fiberglass body and various tops. It costs me $2.50 a day to store. I tell my wife ts cheaper than drinking. :D I used a Chevy V8 to Toyota transfer case bolt in adapter kit. If I'd have installed a V8, I would have had to move the drive train 3" forward to clear the firewall that is indented for the Toyota's straight 6. Since I had a Chevy straight 6 and it fits the same pattern as the V8, I just used it. It was fun. I'm going to put a 350 and 700R to the Toyota transfer case if I ever get it going again. The stick is fun, but automatic with overdrive is very appealing with my getting older knee joints. ;)
