I have found the replacing lost tools is a good way to find them. Seems to work better the more expensive the tool. :)

Working at clearing wind falls today while feeding a burn pile. I heard three tree knocks today. At 5:00 PM, in broad daylight, I realized my $400.00 Stihl chainsaw and mickey mouse ears were missing. I had taken a five minute break and left them 50 feet behind where I was sitting and now they are gone. I'm in working middle of nowhere on a private tract of land. I could hear and pay attention to the red squirrel running around through trees 150 feet away, but I didn't hear anybody hauling off with a 10 pound chainsaw and my mickey mouse ears. I walked the 1.5 mile perimeter of my property and saw no people tracks in the snow in or out, yet a $400 saw has gone missing under my very eyes. <snip>

What does hearing three tree knocks mean? <snip>
Are the knocks a reference to bigfoot?

What was that pile of orange stuff 75' behind the burn pile?
At about the 12 second mark.

Did you look under the burn pile?
Ditto.

A lost Stihl requires a search party.

Buy another immediately, it doesn't hurt to have two.

Face it you misplaced it. Or your tracking skills are terrible.

As I age I noticed that when I make a point of putting something down in a particular place ROUTINELY I might get distracted by something like a red squirrel, put the thing down, forget to pick it up after I watch the squirrel, then move off leaving the thing in the wrong place. This just started happening about 1966 :)

Hope you can resume the search soon.

Keep us posted.

I lost my keyless ignition key for my 2011 Toyota Highlander a few months after I bought it new. At $500 to replace it, I decided just to let my wife use hers, after all it was her car. I got into the habit of looking everywhere for it over the years, before admitting that I probably just left it in a store, or dropped it in a parking lot after I started the car. About 6 months ago I found it in a pail in the garage. It must have fallen out of my pocket into the pail. By that time the batteries were dead, but I did have an almost new keyless key! PS, I did run over my chainsaw once, yours could be buried in the mud.

In a week or so you will hear a saw running and go to check it out. Bigfoot will be building a new house:D

I once scooped and dumped a pile of stuff with my front loader, forgetting a chainsaw and toolbox were in the bucket. Thankfully no damage. But if I hadn't spotted the chainsaw when it got dumped out, I probably would have left it and then been scratching my head later. When I forget where I put something, it makes it real easy for it to get lost worse later on.

One of the important things to do when you've got a mystery crime on your hands is to think about who had the motivation to commit the crime.

My guess is that the trees took it.

We need pics of the crime scene.

I have had glasses snatched by branches never to be found. I have lost and found several chains that fell off a rear carrier. I had a chainsaw stolen. It could be seen from the road. I should have hidden it, but I was doing storm clean up that did heavy damage to a lot of properties, so bad people were cruising the roads just to look. I did not think any one would sink that low to steal a chainsaw while it was being used to clean up. I was wrong. I was cutting then hauling fallen trees all morning and after hauling a load it was gone when I returned.
