F250 motor swap, 7.3 diesel

Got the cooler tube painted, and ran the turbo pedestal thru the parts washer at work today... another 30 minutes in this project.

Nice, what color did you paint it?

Whatever I could find... in this case, white. Should show leaks well, otherwise it's hidden.

Started taking apart the turbo last night. Wasn't really trying to accomplish much, aside from get some of the bolts loose. (Fail) The compressor side came apart easy, the drive (exhaust) side, not so much. Hosed it down with penetrating oil, and will go back when I have had less beer.

Compressor wheels. Stock, 378k miles on the left, new "whicked wheel" on the right. Note the rough/jagged edges/rounded corners on the stock one. Those are signs of grit and dust going thru the turbo, due to a poorly designed stock air filter box. Anyone following this (Richard! *grin*) who owns a 7.3 should check theirs. It's easily done by removing the intake tubes from the air box to CCV fitting, with only a 5/16" nut driver, a flashlight, and 5 minutes.

Under the compressor backing plate you find this...

I'll take a peak sometime and report my findings.

What's the result of worn fins?? Power Loss?? Low rpm, high rpm?? Excuse my ignorance. :)

Thanks for the post Greg!!!!

Richard, you'd not likely notice a dramatic change, depending on how worn/broken the fins are. Once they are unbalanced, it takes its toll on the turbo shaft, breakages do happen, it spins 50K RPMs plus at full throttle. The real point it to be sure the incoming air is filtered better. The FIRST thing I do to any 7.3 I can, is ditch the stock air box. After dinner, I'll post pictures of what with...

Thanks Greg. I'm listening. :)

This is what is referred to as the DIY intake/6637 filter on the diesel forum (powerstroke.org if you want to know where else I hang out) I stole the idea from. It's as simple as removing the stock air box, slipping a piece of 4" exhaust pipe in the tube, and sticking the new filter on the pipe. Takes about 15 minutes if you take your time and drink a beer.

Early '99 style

Late '99-'03 style... note that the filter sits more square with the battery and fender. Also, the 4" pipe only needs to be 3" long, not 6".

Filter number is -6637 depending on brand. Ultimately they are made by Baldwin, so just find the cheapest version, $25 (online, multiple filter purchase) to $45 (single, local parts store)

Imagine how many c/f of air that (wheel) has pumped! 378k miles, at what's an average rpm? Pretty amazing I think. I put an hour meter on my first 7.3 back in 88 just to keep better service intervals, it was "naturally aspirated" (no turbo) but I sold it, running with no issues at 9000 something hours on it! My 01 has 4800+ hrs on it now but has been light duty, still registered but for the past 7-8 years been only 2k miles a year. Gas is a lot cheaper.

I think my duramax with 427,000 miles has around 9,000 hrs
