My thread, 7.3 related, no worries!

Is the pan leaking? If not, there's still hope... I dealt with one on my buddies truck, clean it up as best you can, and coat it well with a product from the Eastwood company, Rubberised Rust Encapsulaor. I've used it before.

This is an early '99, about 2 years ago.

For best access, remove oil filter, torque converter cover, and starter.

New JB Weld for fuel worked for me. Former city salt truck. Hit oil pan with 80 grit sandpaper and brake cleaner after draining all oil out of engine. Covered lower front part of pan coming up on the sides. Maybe 1/8th of a inch thick. Allowed to cure and painted entire pan with Eastwoods POR several times. Waited a week and completed oil change and have driven it since. Check at every oil change and still okay.

My buddy used JB Weld on his other truck, it lasted until we swapped that motor into another truck and changed the oil pan. There's a link to all that posted earlier in this thread, worth finding, I document all the work I did to both his trucks.

Thanks, must have missed it. Glad we are only on post #54.

Just bought my own 7.3L yesterday and it's all new to me (second diesel after tractor).

I was a medium duty phone mechanic (fleet breakdown manager at TruckVantage with GE) back in '97 when I first learned of the T444E - I thought it was fascinating how they'd made it hydraulic with the case oil. Only engine in my assigned fleets that didn't poop the bed in consumer rental use too. Transmissions behind one - sure... No engine failures in the 2 years I was there.

I'm going to put up with stupid ford problems because I wanted this powertrain. A 7.3 nv271, and a pair of Dana 60's. What's not to love? :D

I don't tow at all with my 01. The juice tranny of that vintage is chit imho. I put a new one in every July for the first 3-4 years of owning it (warranty work). But then I was towing a 18k manlift on a goosneck also, not everyday, but maybe once or twice a month. Now hauling in the bed, it didn't seem to matter. I (daily) had 3500#+ of building material loads.
The motor, (and the rest of the truck) flawless!
