Dealership keeps calling, wont come down on price

Another piece of advice. Don't put up a trade in at first. Tell them no. That is used to scrape down the price of the new to tell you want then make it back on the allowance you get on the old one.
Work the deal. Then tell em you and your wife thought it over and don't want both payments and you want to trade it in.
Also if at all possible tell em you want to think it over over night. Then when they call the next morning(they will) then nibble them for another little bit.

Looking for a car last year, we walked into a big dealership and the guy holding the door open was the one we dealt with. Nice guy but hard to understand. How does one go into a dealership and look at all the sales people and pick out one they want. And if you pick a dud how can a person switch to a different sales person. I should be able to say, "I want someone else," but I find that difficult. I guess I have to grow a pair.

I'd ask for the GM or finance person if they kept calling me & tell them where you were at on the deal, either cough up or shut up.
There is such a thing as harassment.

Subscribed to see how it turns out.

I think I'd just tell them I am no longer I interested. I wouldn't say something like " don't call til you are willing to accept my price"...
Ditto... subscribed! If you want to have them stop, telling them that you bought a new Ford from another dealer for thousands less, should work...

At this point, if you still want the truck, I would start lowering my target price $50 for every phone call they make.

Car salesmen have an up-system on who gets the walk-in customers to keep things fair. You're not likely to get a different salesmen from the one you were met by, they consider it stealing a customer/commission. Unless you ask for someone specific when you walk in, they're going to want to play by their rules.

Beware of closing the deal. The real sales pitch comes when you get in the finance office. There you are offered all sorts of maintanance agreements and other add-ons. Actually, i worked at a dealership for a week. I sold three cars and felt bad about two of them. One lady came in with her daughter because she got a letter from the dealership congratulating her fo paying off her car. The letter also promised her a very good deal to trade it in. I showed her all the various models and ultimately she bought the exact same car she had except it had a better radio that her teenage daughter wanted. I tried to show them other options to no avail. Another guy came in late in the evening and wanted to buy a new truck. He wanted something new as long as the payments stayed the same. I quit after the first week because I disn't want to be a part of those type sales.

The last two vehicles I bought we went to various delaers and brands to decide exactly what we wanted. I told every salesman we were not buying today but were considering their whatever. I still got the "buy now" and save pitch. After we decided exactly the model we wanted and the options, I sent an e-mail to as many dealers I could find explaining what we were going to buy and asked for a " drive out" price. There was quite a range of prices received. In both cases, they had to try and sell contracts and add- ons as well as promising fantastic deals if I financed it with them. In My E-mail I stated I was buying the car outright. It took forever to convince them I had certified check in hand. Did I get good deals? Who knows, but I am happy with the cars.

Well that's an easy one.. tell them you'll take it every day... "Gitt'r ready for me" and just not show up... Every time they call! :D

I like this one. They'll tie someone up getting all of the paperwork ready and then you never show. Marvelous! Fair is fair. They're wasting a little of your time every day.

boy oh boy can i tell you some tricks. i worked at a chrysler dealer years ago. the talking to general manager trick is just one of the more experienced salesman. if they end up selling you a car, the two salesman split the commission. you never talk to the general manager unless its under extreme extenuating circumstances, usually AFTER car is sold.

if you would really like to get a close dealer to come down to your price, take one of your personal checks and fill it out with the further away dealers name and the amount that you want and tell the close dealer you are going to give then one more chance to beat the given price cause your on the way to the other dealer. you can always void out your own check.

just remember that they are salesmen and the CAN really stretch the truth, but so can you. play the dealers game.

When I bought my truck, I had the best price I could find at a dealer an hour away. I went back to my local dealers, there are 4 half a mile away from me, and twice as many that are closer then the one with the best price. None of them would budge, so I drove to the dealer an hour away.

First they tried making friends with me. Asking about work, where I lived, what I liked to do. Buddy buddy stuff that made me uncomfortable, so I didn't give them anything. Just stuck to talking about the truck. Then they hit me with funny math to convince me they could give me a deal and get the payment down to where I wanted it. I refused to talk payments, or interest rates, just stuck to the already agreed to amount for the truck. The guy trying to make friends even went so far as to ask me to go for their payment plan as a personal favor to him. Weird!!!!! Then once I was in the office with the guy to do the paperwork, he tried to add on a few grand for upgrades that he claimed they added to the truck and that they where above the agreed to price. I said no, thank you, but I'm paying the price agreed to or I'm driving to a dealership that was farther away from where I live, but who said they would also sell me the truck for the agreed to price. I guess he knew it was true, because that ended that line of BS. He then tried to do the finance game of offering me a monthly payment instead of the agreed to price. It's amazing how much time they waste playing these games, but I realize that it works for them often enough to do it. In the end, I got my price and financed it for 2 % interest. It took close to 4 hours of playing games with them to get it done, they just drag it on and on forever.

Just keep one thing in mind, the dealership has seen all the tricks mentioned here, many times over. Your really just wasting peoples time trying them. Just do your homework and offer them your price and get up and leave if they won't take it.

To the OP, if the salesman doesn't have anything to do at the moment, he figures to keep calling and maybe you will cave in.

Believe it or not there are some dealerships that don't do any of the things mentioned. I can think of one right now about 20 miles away. And of course there are some that are even more crooked than some of the things mentioned so far. I can take you to that one too. But not ALL car dealers play games.. probably most, but not all.

I've had better luck than most of the stories on this thread. My pet peeve is the "documentary fee." They group it in with the other licensing fees, but it's really just extra money added to the taxable sale price of the vehicle. And of course the bill of sale is purposely designed to attempt to hide that fact.

The last time I bought a truck, I did my homework, offered a fair price, and they agreed! I must admit, that shut me up.

My guess is the salesman is being required to call you by his manager. Or he really is old school and knows a certain percentage will buy with enough calls.

Walked in the Local Toyota dealership looking at Sienna Vans , the wife knew exactly what she wanted . Looked and told the salesman thanks we just wanted to see one . He asked " what would it take to sell you one tonight ?" So I threw out a price 5 grand below sticker . He comes back with $ 800 shaved off the price . So I told him sorry , you had your shot . He then shoots back " You will NEVER get one at that price " ........................................ 2 weeks later I walk back into the dealer and find the salesman , he asks If I was ready to buy ? I hand him a copy of my sales receipt , told him you were right , I didnt get one at what I offered you , I got it for $ 5500 less .

So the dealer called and wanted me to turn in my 2014 F150 lease early, claiming they could give me the same lease payment for a new (2016) F150, despite the fact that the new ones have gone up in price quite a bit.

Went down to see the Lease manager, and he said he was hoping to get an appraisal $3,000 higher than my current payout value, which could then be used as a "down payment" on the new one. (Not enough for me, unfortunately.)

So, it seems that even the "used" F150's are going up in value!

I had something sort of similar happen. In 2000 when I was in my mid 20's I decided to get my wife a new Volvo S80. We went to the closest dealership one night around 8 to look at one and take it for a test drive, they close at 9. I was driving a little Mazda B2300 at the time that had a recent dent int eh side that hadn't been repaired yet and we were much younger than their normal customers so it took about 10 or 15 minutes of the sales guys "discussing" amongst themselves who would get stuck with us before we got helped. They actually had the car we wanted and we talked them into a test drive but couldn't get any useful information out of the sales guy about the car, he clearly thought we were time wasters. I don't like being discounted like that so when we got back to the dealership, I thanked him for his time and we left without him even trying to give us a card.

This was the beginning of dealerships setting up Internet marketing/sales departments so since I now knew exactly what we wanted, I faxed every Volvo dealer within 2 hours of us telling them what we wanted and to send us their best price. We ended up getting the car at another dealer for $50 over invoice and did the whole deal via email except for signing the paperwork, I was in the dealership less than 30 minutes.

On the way home in the brand new car, we stopped at the other dealer and told the GM that we had just bought this car from their competitor because of the way we were treated by their sales staff. He wasn't very happy.

...we stopped at the other dealer and told the GM that we had just bought this car from their competitor...
We didn't do this, although, that might have been fun. When we were buying a Tacoma, our local dealer found the truck we wanted in Mt. Airy... they should not have told us that! Mt. Airy is on our way to our mountain property... we call Mt. Airy and without haggling they were $200 bucks cheaper and we didn't have to pay extra for $200 floor mats.

We told them we wanted the truck and would be there just before 5. We showed up at the dealer at 5pm, they gave us the keys and said to go test drive it and we said, "no, we just want to pay for it". We might have been able to reduce the price by haggling but it's not worth it to me.

Found a F250 we wanted and the Dealer said they were willing to make a deal... drove an hour to see it and then they said they would need another $1500 for overhead.... thanks but no thanks... was ready to drive it home.

Then we had found one at another dealer... it was late in the evening...drove it and walked out with the figures... came back when they opened and no one could find the keys... said they had sold it last night???

So we ordered what we wanted from Dealer 3 that didn't have much of a selection and that made it a 2016...

After we ordered at the local Dealer... both of the others kept calling... said ordering was a mistake... blah, blah, blah.

It's ironic because the one we first wanted is still on the lot 3 months later... and they still call even though I said we already have our new truck and it's a model year newer...

I can appreciate a straight up... yes or no or even this is the best we can do...

It's the sales stuff that drives me nuts... I know what I want and what I am willing to pay...
