Suction filter killing performance, need better options.

Thanks everyone for all the info. I should have a 100 mesh screen coming in the next few days. I'll let you know how it turns out.
I wish you had done enuf research to see how bad a move that is. ... You will be letting through particles up to the equivalent of 100 grit sandpaper -- 150 micron [.006 inch]. Far too large to flow through in the oil film. And, adding insult to injury, the screen will be more restrictive than a finer paper media.

I think it is 0.040-0.045" but you are correct about the size being large, like I said it is only a trash screen. The problem is that you can't put fine filtration in front of a pump unless you pressurize it somehow, otherwise the inlet restriction will kill the pump and send debris downstream. Many OEMs don't install inlet screens because if the oil is already clean all you are doing is increasing the inlet restriction which will usually result in more wear. ISZ

Is the suction screen/filter the only filtration on that kubota? Or does it also have a return filter like normal?

An inlet filter is not a bad thing.

Powertrac owners have been using inlet filters for about 30 years.

They only cause trouble if not changed at set intervals.

I have a 10 micron filter in the input to the closed hyd system VSP pump.

Just need to match the filter flow rate to the pumps flow rate.

A gauge on the filter is a good thing also.

That's right. The McCormick (Landini) GX50 filter I posted above had a clever arrangement that slightly
pressurized the inlet filter 50psi or so to avoid cavitation. My Deeres have all had mesh inlet screens;
my Kiotis, no inlet screens at all.
