I really don't have a need for the interweb stuck in my pocket the time and wonder, just for the music & camera abilities, will a smart phone do those things either, 1. without the internet service (I guess they call that a data plan), or 2. not connected to a carrier at all? A friend has an older iphone he's not using any longer that I can have.
I like the size and ruggedness of my old mil.spec flip phone, don't text, and like actual maps, but would like to have the music storage & camera that the "smart phone" offers to throw in the truck or tractor for when I want it. (plus my little $120 Nikon digital camera is starting to give out)

Up here (Manitoba Canada) with any of the companies if you are getting a new smart phone you have to upgrade to the data plans. If you bring your own smart phone (I gave my dad a hand me down from my kids) you can activate it on just a voice or voice and text plan. You can then use wifi in your house (or restaurants etc) to download the photos, access smartphone apps like maps to look at etc. Gives you the better camera, memory etc and still just a phone.

the answer to your question is yes it will work fine, and if you have wifi in your house it will work fully there

Yes, but you won't be able to call people or use it without wifi. ( not entirely true, you can use the camera, and listen to pre downloaded music) . It won't be able to call even with wifi. I'm only paying $30 a month for my iPhone. I have 1gig of data, 1400 minutes, and unlimited text.

Yes. That's all an iPod is... basically, an iPhone without the phone.

Yeah, but I don't know anyone that's willing to give me an ipod.

Thanks fellas, I just don't want to haul one of these big azz things around all the time. Will I be able to load music onto it from my library on the computer? (mac)

You should. Just be sure whoever gives it to you gives you the associated apple account or you may be sunk someday.

Yeah, but even if you turn internet on for just a few seconds the darn things demand to be updated etc etc... Pain.

Are you sure on this? My IPhone 6 & older 4 work without data I think.
The 6 I can turn the cell data off and it still makes and receives calls.
The 4 I use for backpacking and it does calls, camera, maps, ebook, etc without a data plan but when in a town or home the WIFI works with it to web surf and get email.
I'm with Verizon.

Yes, in the big problem is, if you except the updates, it tends to overload your phone, the solution for which is apparently only one thing: buy a newer, bigger phone!

I was advised to stop accepting any updates from Apple on my iPhone 5s. Same thing with my Mac, now that has reached the ripe old age of, about six years or so.
