Get a few of em Greg, they are also very handy on "bucking" up a big one too. Once your 4-5" into your cut, tap in a wedge to keep from getting pinched. The more you use them, the more you'll wonder how you ever lived without them.

I only have one wedge... somewhere. Need to toss it in the tractor tool box. Need to buy a few more too...

Stick a 5 1/2" and an 8" wedge in your back pocket every time you grab your saw. Like Rusty says once you get in the habit you will be amazed at how much work they save.

This is where I ordered mine from. I also got the wedge pouch. Nice to put on belt and always have 4-5 wedges with you. It's stored in my saw case so it's always with me.

I never knew about the plastic ones until about a year ago, I must have been living under a rock or something. They sure beat the snot out of steel ones for 90% of what I use them for. I stuff them in my back pocket.

Aluminum

I am wondering what the attributes of an aluminum wedge are. I have never seen one let alone used one. I would think they might be expensive and that is why they aren't common here. How come you prefer them over plastic?? Thanks.

I have no complaints with the plastic ones they seem pretty good to me. Once in a great while I may break one when it is cold and down around 0 degrees F but it is usually just the tip that breaks and it is my fault for not hitting it square.

Really, the key aspect of the plastic wedges is that if you have to saw into/through them, it's not an issue for the saw or chain. I have only had to do that once in my life. Made some pretty orange chips.
