I would put in gear, wedge diff lock pedal down, jack up rear wheels , and see if 1 turns by hand, (broken side). Remove brake drum cover on that side. Drum may fall out if shaft broken.

Not necessarily. Are you saying 1 side IS trying to turn? That would be the broken side with pinion teeth grabbing occasionally. You realize, with differential, only 1 side, (easiest), turns at a time.

No...I probably do not understand it correctly. Here is what I was assuming. Tell me where I've gone off the deep end. Normal operation the left rear wheel drives, when 4wd is engaged the front 2 wheels also pull, when the differential is engage the right rear wheel begins to pull as well as the left.....for whatever reason, this is how I always thought it worked hence my comment.

No, it can be 1 side or the other, same with the front.

That's because the side that is supposed to be driving at the time is broken, Aptly named diff. lock connects the broken side and the idle side. Just find out which side does not drive with lock engaged.

So if I jack it up, in gear with diff lock pedal blocked down....the side that turns by hand is the probable broken one? And this is the side I should take brake drum off of to inspect? Can I fix from here if it is the brake pinion shaft or sheared pinion?

Ok, I did that tonight after work. The right tire would not spin by hand but the left one would, so I believe that is at least the first problem. Talked to a guy at Hoye today that said it COULD be what is causing the grinding when clutch is pushed also but may not be. So I want to get this part fixed first.

Tonight I took the wheel off, the left fender off so I could get to it easily. I got what I believe is the brake drum cover off. It had 7 bolts on it. Some water drained out as I began to break it free. Was stuck pretty good.

My question now is what to take off next as taking the brake drum cover off showed me nothing...other than everything looks filthy inside there.

2nd picture is looking at the end of the pinion shaft. This drawing shows a similiar 2000 setup. The shaft #9 is what the drum is on and what Norm was talking about. TRANSMISSION_INTERNAL: Yanmar Tractor Parts

I just looked at the brake section in my manual and it makes sense now. I just did not expect the shoes and all to come out with the cover. So the brake drum is the next part. So if I take off the brake drum, the shaft (#9)....will it just pull out so I can inspect it for damage?
