Not necessarily. Are you saying 1 side IS trying to turn? That would be the broken side with pinion teeth grabbing occasionally. You realize, with differential, only 1 side, (easiest), turns at a time.

No...I probably do not understand it correctly. Here is what I was assuming. Tell me where I've gone off the deep end.Normal operation the left rear wheel drives, when 4wd is engaged the front 2 wheels also pull, when the differential is engage the right rear wheel begins to pull as well as the left.....for whatever reason, this is how I always thought it worked hence my comment.
And to add to that Norm..Nothing is trying to turn until I push the differential down.
I would put in gear, wedge diff lock pedal down, jack up rear wheels , and see if 1 turns by hand, (broken side). Remove brake drum cover on that side. Drum may fall out if shaft broken.
