I need an AR-15

   / I need an AR-15 #61
I'm not a fan of open sights for the very reason I can't see clearly out very far when using them. I never tried the red dot stuff, so I don't know if I would like it or not. I consider myself a hunter first and don't really care for shooting guns. It's just part of what it takes to be successful when out hunting.

I went with the Nikon scope for my wifes AR. It was on sale for $99 at Academy when I bought it.

Red dots are great or hunting too. They are fast, and allow you to keep both eyes open for tracking running game. Give one a try.

I might one for my next AR. I wonder if my wife would mind if I gave her a second one? If it's for her, she should be happy to have two of them!!!!

I have one on a Ruger 10/22. There is nothing faster for getting on target with both eyes open. Not bragging.. (well maybe just a little) but last year at a competition, I was able to place 5 hits from a port arms position with safety on on 5 steel targets at 25 yards distance in 2.55 seconds. I won the match.

The targets varied in size from 5 inches to about 1 foot in length. They were varied in shape and height. I thought that 5 shots and 5 hits in 2.55 seconds from the beep of the timer to the last shot was pretty good. I don't think I could have done it with my scoped 10/22, (I had it there too) but I chose the one with the red dot at that distance for maximum speed. Now if the targets were over 50 yards, I would have chosen the rifle with the conventional scope.

How is the red dot during the night? I've been thinking about getting a LED flashlight for the front of the AR, but don't know how far out that will reach. Currently when the dogs wake us up that something is out there, my wife grabs the spotlight and I take the AR. Before buying the AR, I would take an open sited revolver. We have chickens, ducks and other livestock, so it's not uncommon to have coyotes and racoons kill something. It's also not uncommon for me to get one with the pistol. So far, the AR with the scope has not been used at night. I can see fine through the scope when she shines the spotlight, but if there is something better out there, that's what I'll want.

The red dot works well at night, Make sure that you can turn down the dot intensity way down. The aimpoint on my 10/22 has 11 positions settings. the lowest one can barely even be seen in daylight, but is perfect for nighttime use. I you look at one in the store, make sure the lowest intensity is difficulty to pick up even in the store. Otherwise it will be too bright at night when you pupils are dilated and your eyes are the most sensitive.

Yep good advice. Also might want to look at green dot. Mine has both. Some folks see green easier.

Eddie, nice scope. What rail mounts did you use for it?

I went all Nikon with the scope and the rings. Is that what you asked? They are designed to work together and it was an easy install.

As I aged, I found the red dot was a game changer. Target acquisition is so much quicker, not to mention the ability to consistently place shots. On my hunting rifles, I use Leupold VX-R scopes, and for my AR I use a Vortex HD GENII 1-6x24. Both are variable when needed, but also have the adjustable red dot. I'll never go back.
Note, the VX-R is not a true red dot - the center of the reticle is illuminated, but you still need to maintain good eye position. Not so much with the vortex - crank it down to 1x and go.
