I need an AR-15

As I aged, I found the red dot was a game changer. Target acquisition is so much quicker, not to mention the ability to consistently place shots. On my hunting rifles, I use Leupold VX-R scopes, and for my AR I use a Vortex HD GENII 1-6x24. Both are variable when needed, but also have the adjustable red dot. I'll never go back.
Note, the VX-R is not a true red dot - the center of the reticle is illuminated, but you still need to maintain good eye position. Not so much with the vortex - crank it down to 1x and go.
Agreed. I like the red/green option on my Burris AR-332 3x power and the reticle still works if the battery is dead. Something to consider.

I use a cheap $34 red dot it works great..I can put it inside a silver dollar everytime from about 200 ft. Both eyes open can't beat them. I have a bushmaster optics ready I bought 2 years ago on black Friday for $500. I use the cheap Russian ammo you can pick up on sale for $6 never had a misfire.

Sounds very impressive... you are obviously a well trained shot. I will say though you get what you pay for in optics. Usually they are all fairly sharp in the middle of the view, better glass is sharper at the edges and the best, much brighter overall. Very important in low light. Go check out and compare some binoculars such as Swarovski vs. Vortex. Vortex is very good but... not close to Swarovski. Huge price difference and hard to justify unless it is your livelihood, but big difference in quality of glass.

How is the red dot during the night? I've been thinking about getting a LED flashlight for the front of the AR, but don't know how far out that will reach. Currently when the dogs wake us up that something is out there, my wife grabs the spotlight and I take the AR. Before buying the AR, I would take an open sited revolver. We have chickens, ducks and other livestock, so it's not uncommon to have coyotes and racoons kill something. It's also not uncommon for me to get one with the pistol. So far, the AR with the scope has not been used at night. I can see fine through the scope when she shines the spotlight, but if there is something better out there, that's what I'll want.

I installed a Vector Optic Cobra fore grip, with flashlight and green laser, on my Bushmaster AR15. Unless looking into bright light I can see the green laser spot in daylight. The flashlight is not great but works ok. I think I paid just over $100 for it back in 2013.

That looks like just the thing!!! I wish the flashlight had more power. I'm going to keep looking, but I'm saving this link. Thanks :)
