GE to phase out CFL bulbs for LEDs

/ GE to phase out CFL bulbs for LEDs #11
In the past few weeks, I've noticed tons of 60 watt equivalent LED's in stores, priced below $2 per bulb. I wish I could find suitable 100 or 150 watt equivalent LED bulbs. I can find a few, but they are older styles and still priced $20 - $30 each. I'm hoping the higher lumen bulbs will be next to get updated and lower prices.

The problems with the higher lumen bulbs becoming cheap is the cost of the drivers needed, and the heat buildup in those driver electronics. One thing you can do is put two of the 60 watts bulbs into a single socket with a 2 to 1 socket adaptor. This is what I did for a couple of sockets in my shop. If you just have old bare porcelain sockets, this is a cheap and easy solution to get more light on the cheap.

That's a great idea. I could do that for some of my porcelain sockets, and have 2 of the 800 lumen bulbs for less than half the cost of 1 of the 1600 lumen bulbs. The added bonus is that if one bulb goes out, there is still partial light. And I always have spare 800 lumen (60 watt) bulbs around the house.

The double socket is what I did for the living room lamp my wife reads by. The lamp used to have a single 3 way incandescent bulb, but this setup gives plenty of light.

I went with your suggestion and it turned out great. I picked up dozen 60 watt 4000k LED bulbs for under $2 each, and doubled them up in my porcelain sockets. They replaced the 100 watt equivalent CFLs in my barn. Now I have instant light that is brighter and cooler than before.
While looking at the LEDs, I looked at the same brand in 75 and 100 watt equivalents as a comparison. 75 watt = $15 for 2. 100 watt = $15 each. And only the 60's were available in 4000k. it was an easy decision and worked well. Thanks so much!
