Buying Advice Help me find a tractor to manage my 40 wooded acres

I will concede that on asphalt and concrete R4s are the way to go but the OP is taking about woodland maintenence not construction work.

Right, we've covered that. The problem is that you said that "R1s are the only option for a tractor that's going to do serious work." This is a generalization that applies to all tractors, and it is incorrect. You could have said, "R1s have a lot more traction in most cases which can really help do serious work in the woods" and no one could disagree with you.

Ok what he said, I generalized simply on behalf of the thread I didn't know I was on here with a bunch of lawyers and english professors. Can we move on now this is silly.

Sure, welcome to tractorbynet, by the way.:)

Welcome, aarolar! And, by now, you can see that we operate with the very highest standards here on TbN- especially when giving advice, which is about a third of what we do, the other thirds being asking for advice, or showing off our neat toys. I'd say that if not R-1's or turfs, then R-4's, depending.

I have little experience with R4's, but have plenty with turf, and R1's. My R1's have done me real well in my poorly draining mud pit of a piece of property. If you're not careful, they'll dig some serious ruts in a hurry though! On the other hand, they do clean out better than R4's. They each have their place.

Have any of you heard of Richie Bros. Auctions? There's an auction in Fort Worth next week and they have several tractors that could be in my price range.

I have only heard of them never any experience with. Brandi(Bindian) I believe has got some stuff from them, and she just posted image.jpg

Auctions can be great for deals- but bring a mechanic friend with you, -
jmo but There's always a (problem child) or two that someone is trying to unload mixed in with the decent ones.

You pay your money and take your chances, and it is usually as -is where-is...
and if it breaks in two after you won the bid, they (may) help you load the to halves:laughing:

with that said, this was a Richie Bros. auction buy...
and no complaints

Bought several auction cars and one of them (a Fiero) had no keys so the auctioneer said they couldn't un lock it or start it...

Bid once- and no one else bid, Hauled it home on the 5th wheel and when i finally got keys made and was able to get the car unlocked, and the trunk (engine decklid) open found the intake and head removed laying to the side with very rusted engine cylinders:laughing:
I like auctions, but need to be careful and check things out closely if possible...

Hi guys. OP back again after getting some seat time and shopping around. It looks like the TYM T354HST is the winner. I considered buying used, but a lot of tractors out there don't seem to lose their value even though they look like they've been rode hard and put away wet. For about the same price (maybe $1-2K more) I can get a brand new tractor with a warranty from TYM.

Other pros to the TYM, in no particular order:
1. Best price by far for a 35hp tractor.
2. Very ergonomic layout.
3. Loader specs are the best in this price range.
4. Dealer is very down to earth and took the time to answer all my questions, plus let me dig in the dirt with a shiny new tractor.
5. Rear remote is standard, but dealer recommended the 3rd function for the grapple. The LS dealer was pushing the rear remote (at extra cost) as the way to power the grapple.
6. Implements at dealer cost, and not just at the time of purchase.

Cons:
1. Dealership is 1.5 hours away from my property. This is the biggest con, and I don't have a trailer to tow it back when I have a problem. I need to borrow one.
2. Resale value is questionable. Mitigation: don't sell it.
3. Will dealership be around in 5 years to service it? Mitigation: my friend's a mechanic.
4. Not American made. Are any tractors under $20K, though?

You will now find me on the attachments sub-forum. There's a lot of cool stuff out there. :)

Congrats Allen I'm sure the TYM will be a fine tractor, heck they build tractor for others. As for the grapple 3rd function is nice but I run mine off the rear remote takes 5minutes run the lines up under the tractor and zip tie it up out the way.

I apologize in advance if I am just repeating something posted earlier, but if TYM tractors are in the final consideration, how about Cabela's??
