TC40D fuel problem

Okay. Before I spend Easter Monday mauling with this beast a couple of questions to, hopefully, prevent me from 'barking up the wrong tree'.

In the fuel tank diagram that I've - hopefully - attached it shows an 'elbow' at the bottom of the tank. Excuse my ignorance but what is the purpose of this? It doesn't appear to attach to anything and may have nothing to do with my problem but if I know what it's for then that will help.

Is it possible to withdraw the fuel pipe from the tank? If so, would that be a wise move?

A couple of things I also ought to point out. I got the tractor second hand and, it seems, the previous owner indulged in a bit of butchery with the wiring. I recently discovered,as well, that the fuses have mostly been replaced with those of a 25amp rating. Far too high, surely?

So far - not so good. Hit an obstacle immediately as the tractor had to be towed up a muddy incline which is also on a corner. Two towing vehicles were tried and both started skidding in the mud. Very aggrannoying and frustrating.

Since we couldn't move the tractor I thought I'd re-check the fuel cut-off solenoid by completely removing it and applying power directly to see what happened. And what happened was..........precisely nothing! So it appears this was the culprit after all. As long as nothing else is amiss. The frustration now is in waiting for a replacement.

Make sure when you replace that solenoid (SBA185206085/SBA185206083) you replace the seal (SBA025100016) since a failed seal will let fuel get into the solenoid and cause it to fail.

Thanks. I would've thought that a new solenoid would come with all the necessaries but your post seems to suggest otherwise. Something to be aware of.

I've just looked at the online parts catalogue and it does indeed show the seal/washer as a separate entity. Seems like a bit of a rip-off to me. Anyway thanks for the warning. I probably would never have realised otherwise.

We had to replace our due to failure of the old seal and I found that the new seal is separate and extra $$ - you know, like the way they charge extra for the gasket for thermostats on cars :(

The nightmare continues.

I replaced the fuel cut-off solenoid but, prior to that, I changed the 25 amp fuse for a 15amp since I thought 25 was too high. When I came to start it.......nothing. The dash lights up but it doesn't even crank. I checked the fuse and found it had blown so tried a 20 amp and the same thing happened. So I tried a 25 amp with exactly the same result.

Curiously, the fuse block on my tractor is, compared to the manual's diagram, upside down. I can only assume that the previous owner removed it and - for whatever reason - replaced it upside down either wittingly or unwittingly (Different person?)

There has been a fair bit of fiddling with the wiring but I'll see if I can find a wiring diagram which should help.

I'll try and take a photo of the wiring behind the seat so you can see what I'm faced with.

I'm curious as to why it is now blowing fuses like there's no tomorrow when it was working fine previously. I am persuaded it is related to the seat switch since I had a bit of gear behind the seat when I was doing the job.

However, if anyone can help in any way I'd very much appreciate it.

And thanks for your help thus far.

Well, I found a wiring diagram but I still think I'm going to have a headache isolating the problem.

I'm do not have the diagnostic skills of Jinman (Our shared NH service manager called him for help a few times) but I know where I'd start. I'd jump the seat switch first and rule it out as the cause. Then I'd check that all of the safety switches are traveling far enough and then check all of the associated wiring. The PTO linkage on mine tends to vibrate into gear while running. I use this "feature" as a a sort of anti-theft device. The ignition switch is also known to be a no-start, shut off problem. There is a little black box hanging under the dash that I remember Jinman having me check for a no-start. What the box is I can't remember.
