Pin Hole Too Big

in the very first post is was noted that the tbl was looked over and the noted area in question was overlooked. you saw the bad area after it was purchased so you could have seen the area before the purchase. whose fault is this. the auctioneer? yours. if you saw it you probably would have bid differently. might not have purchased it and wouldn't have the tlb and the problems. I'm sure with or without the repair you still purchased it cheeper than new. be happy that you have a tractor instead of sue happy! take to machine shop and have fixed and be happy!

It's easy to understand your angst with this situation, but there's a reason equipment, furniture, cars, and PEOPLE go to auctions. If the item for sale is in top condition, an individual will sell their goods in the classifieds and can afford to wait on the right buyer. If the item in question is average to below average in condition, send it off to a consignment or auction. Companies must watch cash flow and inventory turns, so their first choice may be auctions. If that piece of equipment was perfect, the service technician would have likely told his buddies ar a "shill" in the audience to bid on the item. Over the last 40+ years, I've bought and sold maybe a hundred cars, motorcycles, trucks, tractors, etc., and two (2) of them came back. Almost every item I bought didn't run, and I built engines, transmissions, differentials, suspensions, etc. and passed it on. I never did this intending to make a lot of money - it was a hobby that didn't cost me anything. The two cars which came back (mis-installed head gasket and bad brakes)? Well, I repaired them both and sent the customer on his merry way, but that is NOT t.

No, the welding of a large washer over that oversized hole and painting it orange was done only for the auction crowd, and it was only done to hoodwink the potential bidders and hope that the winning bidder would not have the gall to demand fairness.
Was the paint fresh, or had they been running it like that for a while?
IMO, fresh paint on something at an auction is a red flag. If they had been running with the washer for a while, they probably put it on to get it back in service while they were getting a replacement in (or waiting till the next budget year to order a new one).

As-is never has and never will mean that the seller gets to legitimately paint over known problems that prospective purchasers are not expected to see.
True, but if they have been using it like that for a time, they may not have considered it to be more than "normal wear and tear" for such a machine.

My only experience is with auto auctions, so this may not apply.

The auction houses I'm aware of have a dispute resolution process. If a problem is brought forth within a certain period of time, the auction will freeze the funds transfer to the seller and investigate the issue.

A car collector friend of mine bought a very expensive classic only to find major issues. He prevailed in his dispute and got his money refunded.

There is a saying that I tend to go by. "You get what you pay for" Nuff said except for "There are no free lunches".

I got here via the road of hard knocks just like everyone else does.

Swing Frame Pin Hole Too Big.jpg
Attached is a picture of the large fender washer moved just a touch which shows the oversized hole on the swing frame - a block of steel that does weigh roughly 150 lb. Even though I and others exercised the tractor in the rental/auction yard, the washer and pin didn't move enough to show the oversized hole until the first day I started to use it at home.

I'm still in the process of building a rolling cart that'll take the weight of the mainframe and stabilizers along with some supports for the boom/dipperstick/bucket assembly so that once all the pins are removed, I can then get to and remove the swing frame. Someone asked if there was new paint on the tractor, and there was, but there was also new paint on nearly all (all?) of the several hundred pieces of machinery up for sale. In fact, they'd all been pressure washed and buffed up shiny, just so the dents and dings and bent and broken parts would be less distracting. That's all fine and expected, but I am surprised with those that accept that purposeful deceit is part of the game and should be graciously accepted. Too many of us seem to have become callused and complacent toward the wrong side of humanity. A few will not, and if in the future you purchase something that met or exceeded your best expectation, be sure to thank the seller along with those that decided not to get callused but instead got even.

Got a picture of the other side?

Maybe I am seeing it wrong, but if the washer is welded to the pin, and if the pin is the diameter it looks like looking at the top, then that hole looks twice the size that it is supposed to be. Hard to believe there would be THAT much wear. And what I can see of the hole does look round.

Can you take that pin out and get a pic of whats going on?

When you were first describing the issue, I was under the impression that they welded the fender washer to the swing post, basically making the hole smaller to fit the pin again, but not for the whole thickness. Doing that WOULD tighten up the slop, but wouldnt last long as the washer would wear out in no time.

If what you are saying is correct, and welding the washer to the pin only to cover the hole, did NOTHING AT ALL to help, only to cover up a problem. Would be like filling a crack in the boom with bondo and painting over it to make it look like it wasnt cracked. I agree if this is the case, deceitful.

Are both sides that way, or just one?
It seems that much slop should have shown up by pushing the boom back and forth by hand.
What happens when you pull the two bolts that hold that pin (#70 below) in? Did they perhaps put an undersized pin in the hole?

Kinda my thoughts in requesting a pic of the other side as well.

If the boom swing cylinders were push-pull (DA) type (rather than push only SA like a snowplow), and the one cylinder is good an tight, pushing the boom my hand wouldnt show anything unusual.
