Ammunition

I unzipped my 10/22 case and found two boxes of 50, plus the 50rnd mag was still full. I emptied the 50 round mag, but remembered how hard it is on my thumb to reload 50 into the clip, so I put that gun down!

Then I ran about 25 CCI through my Remington 580 single shot. That's my favorite gun. Got it when I was maybe 14 and used to compete with it on a youth team at the YMCA indoor range, 50'. I still manage to shoot it about once a year, just to teach the dirt pile a lesson. I should really sight it in on a bench some day. I competed against a lot of kids with high dollar Anschutz rifles and, well, my $69.00 Remington made a lot of rich kids' dads cry! Its a tack driver. My dad was (among other things), a firearms instructor in the army. He knew an army firearms instructor at a Boy Scout camp and that man taught me how to shoot. Then he set me up with an old gun smith and they recommended the 580 for my size and budget. (I've tole this story before). So we went downtown to a sporting goods store, bought the rifle for $69.00 and the salesman asked me if I wanted it wrapped or carry it out? So I walk out of the store in the middle of the day in downtown South Bend, Indiana carrying a rifle down the sidewalk. And people pointed and looked and said, "That boy got him a new gun!" Try that today!

Anyhow, the gun smith did some work on the trigger and put some very nice peep sights and a sling on it for me and at 50' a monkey(which I sometimes resemble) couldn't miss with that thing . :D

Sounds like good clean fun:thumbsup:

My first .22 single shot was the Remington 514 BR. We gave 22 dollars for it. I would love to have it back, but the stock would be to short for me now. It fit fine when I was 12.:)

The 580 was single shot. They also made a 581, which had a clip, and a 582, which had a tubular magazine. And a left handed model. And an SB model, which was a smooth bore. Some day, when I'm rich, I'd like to pick up one of each just to have. But I'm sure they are all pretty much beat to death by now.

Shooting as a youth on a team was fun. We'd practice one hour per week at the indoor range at the Y. Every few months or so, we'd do mail-in competitions, where you shoot your targets with NRA witnesses, then they'd sign them and mail them in to the NRA and they'd mail back the results and awards as earned. It was a pretty popular program back in the 70's. As I recall, I got up to 38th in the country but two of my team mates were much better than me. I got kicked off the team when I turned 18.... it was for 17 and under. :( It was a good 3 years.

I also remember I'd take my rifle to school in the trunk of the car on Mondays.... that was shooting day after school. And I did a presentation in an English class on competitive shooting and took the gun into school to demonstrate. I had to leave the bolt out of the gun and leave it in the principle's office until the presentation, but that was just a safety concern. Not gonna see that in most cities these days, either.

I got an H&R M12 from the CMP a number of years ago and that beast is a tack driver too. The Army used them as trainers.

So, I was wondering if any of you have found an SKS scope or red dot set up you like. My Norinco came with the receiver cover type, that fits pretty darn loose, and also blocks iron sights. I am thinking of going to an AK style side mount. The rail itself is cheap, and I know I'll have to drill and tap the reciever. I would love if it also solved the shells ejecting into scope problem. Pretty much everything I'm seeing is AK side rail, then side mount with 1913 rail on top, then rings, then scope; and my concern is I don't want it being 6" taller than my rifle. Ideally, I would want something like the scope mount in SVD. Any thoughts? Also, I'm cheap, so putting $300 scope and rail on SKS just ain't gonna happen.

Edit: I'm Not looking to put flashlights, laser sights, pistol grips, battery powered chainsaw baynets, or anything else to go tactiCOOL

One of my friends has a side mount for his. I don't know much about it but can ask next time I see him.

I went to a "red neck" (not really that but that's what people today would call it) school and all the guys with trucks had those rifle racks in the back windows with stuff in them. Won't see that today either!
