As someone pointed out, a firearm is just about the last thing you would want not to work when you actually need it. If your chain saw won't start, or your tractor wont start, you can probably just go do something else. If your firearm fails to function..It may be the last time you are going to care about that.

I agree. Although I have a fair amount of experience with firearms, not so much with handguns. That's why I prefer a wheel gun for home protection; they almost always work and in my opinion are much safer, especially for someone with limited firearm experience like my wife. Point, pull trigger. I have a good friend whose daughter-in-law shot herself in the leg trying to chamber a round in a .25 auto. It scared the intruder away, but the hard way.

The Taurus Raging Bull in 454 is a great pistol and very accurate. Just don't clinch your teeth when you fire it.

Thought I was the only one with one of these... Quite the conversation piece. Killed many a snake and a few hogs with it.. Funny watching folks shoot the 454 for first Time.. Never had an issue with it. My other pistols... All shoot fine good never had issues.

Agree. And while I can pretty much fix anything I own, I would leave serious gun problems to a gunsmith. I just don't consider myself qualified enough beyond a simple repair. So I want a gun to be bulletproof (no pun intended) and reliable out of the box.

Hate to say this, but she violated several of the the 4 rules of gun safety.

Rule number one: "All guns are always loaded." They should be treated as if they are.

Rule number two: “ Do not let the muzzle cross anything you are not willing to destroy” is pretty self-explanatory. If the muzzle is pointed at anything that is of value, be it a human, a pet, a body part, or an inanimate object, it will cause death, damage, or great bodily harm if the gun were to be discharged.

Rule number three: “Keep your finger off the trigger until you are on target and ready to fire” is perhaps the most often violated rule. If individuals are not trained in this manner, they can often be seen picking up guns with the finger immediately going into the trigger guard. The finger should be completely out of the trigger guard and placed along the frame rail of the firearm. Even if the finger is off the trigger but left along the edge of the trigger guard, sympathetic muscle movement can cause the finger to retract on to the trigger, with the results being a negligent discharge.

Rule four: “Be sure of your target and beyond” is a rule with two parts. The first part refers to the target. The second is the area behind and beyond the target. If there is not a proper backstop or clear area behind the target, the bullet can miss, or pass through, the target and cause damage in unintended areas and to bystanders.

She violated rule 2 and 3 for sure, and possibly rule 4. And yes, the "manual of arms" for a revolver is somewhat simpler for people that do not practice with and routinely fire their weapons to understand and comply with. And while this is a personal opinion, I don't own any .25 auto's, as I feel they are totally inadequate for personal defense, and are difficult to manipulate, especially under stress. Unfortunately someone gave her the .25 auto on the theory a woman needs a small firearm. Nothing could be further from the truth. A nice 4 inch revolver would have been a much better choice, or a good 9mm auto of which she was familiar and practiced with.

We think nothing of requiring drivers education in school to teach a person to drive, or we practice driving skills with our loved ones for as long as it takes until they are skillful enough to drive safely, yet we will give a firearm to our loved one, with perhaps only cursory or even no instruction, and expect them to somehow magically be safe and effectively use it. Why is that?

I can't disagree with anything you say, in fact I concur. As for the accident, I am unaware of what training, if any, she had. I suspect she bought the gun on her own, since she was single and living alone at the time. Although my wife has taken the CC carry course, and qualified with a semi-auto Ruger (an old one, Mark IV I believe), and she has some experience with a Ruger .357 Security Six, It's my opinion that in a time of stress, a .38 revolver presents less of a chance for an unintended discharge or failure to fire...I still consider her relatively inexperienced. Even a person familiar with semi-autos, if not intimately familiar with a particular weapon could have a problem.

I have friends that My taurus is junk ,and probably wouldn't fire if I needed it to.. I asked which 1 wanted to stand in front of it ,and let me pull the trigger. I haven't had any takers yet. LOL
All brands have had their problems at 1 time or the other..
If you are on the fence about a taurus, jump off ,and go buy 1
I have 2 that I fire regularly, and neither have never malfunctioned
Taurus a very good value

I have a Taurus 709 9mm and a TCP 380. Both have been completely reliable. Taurus makes a very good gun at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend them.

Just wanted to post a 500 round update - so far, I'm very pleased with the replacement pistol that Taurus sent. As mentioned, I've run about 500 rounds through it - mostly soft-point brass-cased reloads from a local store, but also some steel case new production ammo and a box of hollow points, just to see how they fed.

I've had one failure to eject (probably around the 300 round mark) and it was in the middle of shooting a magazine of the steel cased ammo.

It took awhile, but I think I can finally say that I'm satisfied with this particular product from Taurus. Of course, I would have rather had it replaced quicker, but all in all, I think I came out okay on the deal, since I got a brand new pistol at a used pistol price.

Again, just an update in case anyone was curious.

Good luck and take care.
