Swag PortAband Table ?????

Received my Swag version 1.0 table Saturday but haven't installed it yet. I had to order version 1.0 as its only one that adapts to the older model portable band saw.

SWAG V1.0 Portaband Table

The table is very impressive and heavy. Haven't measured it yet but, probably 3/16" plate, maybe 1/4".

I would have like one with miter slots as on the version 3.0 but it only works on the latest HF portable BS.

SWAG V3.0 Portaband Table

I plant to build a base for it that bolts to the table.

More later.

Posted on wrong thread. Sorry.

I know youll love the table. Opens up a whole new world for portabands. I never free hand mine anymore unless its some large piece that is too awkward to run through the PB mounted in its table.
Likewise... Most of my cutting is on relatively small parts and I much prefer two hands on the part vs two on the saw. Much more control IMO.

Got my first lesson on Port-A-Band blades. I tried to cut thru a welding practice coupon with about a 1/2" of 6011 buildup on it. My Milwaukee 10-12 TPI blade didn't get very far and then it struggled to cut 1/8" mild steel. Could be an expensive learning curve :) Think I will try some of the others mentioned if I can find them.

But I love the table !!!

Ive had good luck with the bulk Milwaukee blades (not the ones individually packaged at places like HD). I dunno, they should be the same blades youd think? But I get more life out of the bulk ones purchased from a local industrial supply. Theyre a couple bucks cheaper too.

Also get some stick lube for the blade and give it a light coating before the cut. I use Walter Coolcut. For most people a stick like that will be a lifetime supply for a portaband ;) LPS makes a stick lube as well and Im sure its just as good. LPS makes good stuff too.

Slow the blade down and dont push too hard , for longer blade life. Particularly cutting weld which can be hard.

Scooby, I wonder if these lube sticks would help with rust on bandsaw blades? Down here everything rusts. I have a lot of rust on the 105" bs blade on my WW bandsaw after not using it for a couple of months.

BoeShield T-9 is effective. Comes in aerosol or liquid.

Yep, that good stuff, use it on table saw table. Any ideas on removing rust from BS blades?

Scooby thanks for the tip on the lube. I have some stick Accu-Lube T-B and I never thought to try it on the band saw. Have only used it drilling stainless.

probably not. to use the sticks you basically use the sawblade to cut into them while its running, the stick material gets caught in the sawblade gullets, not so much on the side surfaces. Its not designed as a rust preventative.

Beoshield that Dragoneggs recommends is a good product, but I prefer LPS1 for short term rust prevention. LPS1 and some scotchbrite will clean up lightly rusted metal in no time, smells real good to boot:thumbsup:

Rick, have you tried it on your BS blades? If your rust isn't out of control then this does the cleaning (solvent) and protecting (paraffin wax). As you probably know, developed for aerospace by the Boeing Company but is now widely used in marine/industrial markets.

If you have a lot of rust, you might want to try 'pre-treating' your blades with white vinegar. Soak them for a while and wipe off then apply BoeShield. Vinegar is cheap and safe and organic. Anyways I am a fan of vinegar except in my salad!

I did try attempting to soak one blade in EvapoRust but, while trying to "fold" it up to get into a basin it kicked my ***** and cut the crap out of my arms when it got loose. These thing, are 105" long, never ending, mean snakes. Very docile, when on the BS but, try to put them into small loop for storage (or rust removal) and they want a fight to the finish.

Yup, about two cuts in a log and they are "shining" again!

SR

Rob, I'll try that. I have some 24" seasoned white oak logs, about 6-8" diameter, that I want to try cutting up, on the bandsaw, to make some picture frame parts.

Thanks

Ha, ha, well not really funny... been there. My BIL was telling a story just a couple days ago about his time at PSNS (Puget Sound Naval Shipyard) wood shop, having to wrestle giant bandsaw blades about 12in width and maybe 3/16in thick. He stood up and demonstrated some kind of hula maneuver to coil it. I got a good laugh!

Once shining, just wipe them down with an oily rag or they will rust right back up...

I have no problem coiling 144" bands, you just have to watch some you-tubes to see how it's done...

Yeah, it takes a lot of "Body English" to get one folded. When I get one out, I loosen the ties, throw it over my shoulder and run in opposite direction. Come back 5 minutes later, check to see if it's done moving, and install.

Thanks Rob. I've watched the videos several times but lacking a 3rd hand I'm starting to believe it would be easier to just have a bandsaw for each size blade.

Just a update.
Here are a couple free hand cuts I made on some 1/2" mild plate 5"wide with a 10-14 TPI blade and a blade speed of about 285 SFPM. I am really happy with the saw and table.
