using Glyphosate killing weeds before preparing soil; vegetable garden ??

Hi all...

Might spraying weed killer be a bad idea? Quick scan on net shows some alarm about using weed killers before planting garden.
I figured be easier to work soil if grass all gone. Now have second thoughts. What say you folks??

no harm no foul, just have to wait (not sure of length of time) before planting your seed..

Roundup/glycophosphate kills and dissipates in ten days.

I would use it once to establish a garden, definitely not routinely as a substitute for weed killing cultivation.

Dormant weed seed in the ground will still germinate but hopefully your crop will have a good head start.

You can probably rent a two wheeled, gas powered cultivator for about $25 per day, which would be my first choice.

Short term no problem but it has been named a cancer causing agent by WHO. Money wins in this country so it will be around for awhile, Just Google it and you decide.

What you spray needs to be green & growing.
Spraying when dormant or at other times will not work.

This is accurate and true.

Roundup works best when the plant is actively growing and not under stress. It needs to be sprayed on the foliage so that it can be TRANSLOCATED into the roots to die.

I'm not certain of premixed products, but the concentrate contains a surfactant to help the emulsion "cling" to weeds with waxy surfaces. For invasive plants such as blackberries I always add my own surfactant.

Glyphosphate becomes inactive upon contact with the soil and as such has no residual effect. We've used it in the past for "stale seedbed" situations on different crops.

It is widely used in cranberry bogs around here. A family owned bog in my area is worked by everyone in the family, as soon as the kids are big enough to help. One of the boys in the family worked starting about 12 years old, every year until he reached 25 when he was diagnosed with cancer. Lots of surgery and chemo later he came out of it ok but I have to wonder about the Roundup. I worked for OceanSpray for many years and all the growers were constantly advised on how to use/not use Roundup.

I've been using it in the garden for a very long time and other than getting older, I can't see any new issues. It's been proven safe in test after test for decades.

I got the tilling covered. I have an old disk about 7 - 8 foot. Has to be 60 - 70 years old. Some bearings wore out, but still take grease. 3 of the disks broke in 1/2, but still turn. Used it today and ground the grass up. Had 16 concrete blocks on for weight. Let the grass die, few more passes and I'm good to go.

The hardest part of job was clearing 2 small trees from disk. They grew up through disk. Been setting long time. I wonder if bearings are still available for axels?

What you're planning to do is called a "burndown" by folks who plant crops using no-till drills.

Google "no till drill glyphosate burndown" to get more info.

As mentioned in the thread spray only weeds that are green and growing. I have also read to spray only when you expect several hours of sunshine on the sprayed plants. Glyphosphate impedes the ability of the plant to absorb oxygen needed for growth, or so I have read. Somewhere on the net I saw an applicator. PVC pipe joined in the shape of an L with the long section about 30 inches long. The short section had a cotton rope pushed through holes drilled on each end. Herbicide was poured into the long section and the rope became saturated. Then the rope is dragged over the leaves of the offending plants. More precise than spraying ??

They are called wick (or rope wick) applicators. You can buy them in various sizes (from hand-held to tractor-mounted) or use available plans to build your own.

They're called wick/rope applications or weed wipers. Here's mine.

The modules are 5-ft wide and cost about $100 each. A pretty simple system to rig up. I used mine to control fiddleneck weeds in my oat hay using Roundup.
