Construction Fasteners

Aren't lags resistive shearing like nails?

Also not all nails are construction nails.

I try to build to so that the fasteners are not bearing the load. I try to put wood on top of wood. I still a crude builder. I do birds mouths and rafters. Simple sheds.

I would think construction screws, would be as good as a nail, but I don't know.

Agree...nails/screws are only meant to hold things together. If stuff doesn't move then there is no problem. Proper construction (footings. frost depth, "square/plumb/level")...your fasteners should never come into play other than wind lift on the roof. And there those little galvanized things (maybe $1/pop) do a lot more than one would think.
