In between the fender trailer with heavy axles

Or, if its like the yellow Kaufman in the picture, (which has a hydraulic cylinder to help control tilt speed), you can add a valve inline to the line on the cylinder and close it to lock the trailer in the tilted position.

But if the wheel base is longer than the tilted deck length, it won't work. Jon

The tilt deck length is 14 ft. 6in. so no problem.

I talked to a guy who has one of these trailers and he says it works great for equipment but that you can't load a pickup on it. Since they are gravity tilt when you drive the truck on the front tires start pushing the ramp down before the back ones are on.

The units I looked at had the option of a power up / power down for just a bit more $$ which might solve that issue.

Does a tilt bed generally weigh more than a non-tilt of similar length, GVWR and build quality? What might the difference in weight be, if any, on a 20 footer?

There are workarounds for that, one way would be block the front so it could only come down a couple of inches. Then stop the truck when the rear axle is on the deck, remove the blocks and drive on.
Would that work OK when you go to back off?

Yep. block the back or chain the front so it can only tilt a couple of inches, back up until the front truck tires are on the deck, remove the restraint and back off.

Kaufman doesn't list any weights but PJ lists a 14k rated 20' tilt at 3,420lbs and a 14k similar 20' non tilt at 3,100 lbs. Not a huge difference.

They're a little pricey, but Towmaster has a good rep. T-14D | 16D | 18D | 2D – Towmaster Trailers Felling also makes a good trailer. Rental One is selling off all of their old trailers and going with Felling. I've pulled the 14K drop-deck several times. Felling Trailers -

I really like the Felling Trailer looks, especially this one. http://www.felling.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/FT-12-ESD.png If I had lots of money to spare and the space to keep it. Jon

Torsion axles are great for single axles. But for double axles you want leaf springs.

If you you over a bump with torsion axles, all the weight can end up on 1 axle & overload it. Leaf springs will self level enough to mostly distribute the load.
