The one I bought at Walmart is the FoodSaver Brand and it has a 5 year warranty.

Yep, while the one I ordered direct from the company 3 years ago has a 1 year warranty, I was in Walmart yesterday and noticed the 5 year warranty on the boxes.

You can easily make 6 bags lengthwise and even put some of those moisture crystals in there if you save them. (I always eat mine).

Now Joe, it says right on the bag: "do not eat".. :D

We've had a Sears one for 25-30 years. Still works. We use it on bulk meat and I use it on my weaponized death powder jar (chili peppers run through a food processor!)

Anyone have a link to the best prices for refill bags on the internet? I can't stand buying them at prices in the stores.

Sometimes if ambitious, I'll preseason meat before vac sealing.
Not only chips, but have resealed cereals, crackers, and cookies.

My wife reuses the bigger bags for smaller items second time around. We buy the bags at Sam's Club and it works for me. They seem to be the best price around and some things you just have to pay for.

Sodamo---The seasoning before packing sounds like a great idea. Never thought of that.

Have used one for a number of years for venison. It has worked really well and also tends to speed up the packaging process....which is a good thing after spending hours butchering a deer or two.

I talked with my meat cutter and shared my concerns about meat coming out dry. He suggested freezing first also. In the meantime I have gone back to the freezer paper I used when I was a meat cutter. Years ago I found a place that sold pipe tobacco in bulk...ordered 2 five lb. bags of 2 different blends...never realized how much a 5lb. bag of pipe tobacco was. Our foodsaver got a work out that day. Happy to say that years later that tobacco is as fresh and moist as the day it went in the bags.

Excellent use for the FoodSaver. I also do likewise.

We use ours all the time for everything from resealing potato chips to plastic bags of bolts and nuts. Of course, we limit the amount of vacuum when resealing chips :) Even when buying meat in bulk for just the two of us, we'll break down the large volumes into meal size portions and freeze the rest. Unless you live next to a food store, I don't see how a family can get by without one.

I like to go to the store on Tuesdays or Wednesdays; that's when they mark down the steaks and such that they didn't sell on the weekends. If I can get ribeyes for $6.98 per pound, even though I do have to buy 3 or 4, it beats paying $14.98. Our freezer is kept pretty full. I buy a lot of meat when it goes on sale, especially baby back ribs at $2.98 per pound. I don't have to vacuum pack the ribs, but the Food Saver comes in handy for the steaks and hamburger.

No one has mentioned it... you know you can vacuum freeze individual servings of soup, stew and chili, too.

Just freeze it in a Tupperware container and then it works flat on the counter with no mess. Love ours.

Someone mentioned wanting to use it with mylar. Ours says it does so I tried it and yes, it works fine.

We buy big packs of meat like pork steaks and repack and freeze for future use. Same with steaks and chops. Banana bread, freeze then vacuum pack. Take your freshly sharpened chain saw chain and oil it, then vacuum pack. Spare shot shells or other ammo to stash for future use. Vacuum pack dry clothes for float trips or other wet activities.

Great tool.
