Hello All,

After spending the last two weeks off and on extracting about 14 stumps from 6-20 stems " by HAND with a mattock and two old chainsaws,I'd like to build a dual function 3-point attachment of, a two foot width tiller to dig away the top level dirt to get down to sprawling roots ,then switch 'hubs/shaft' from tiller to like a buzz saw something to cut exsposed major roots and nuke the heavy roots with a homebrew 24" saw blade(shielded) . I am thinking a 1:1 gearbox so things aren't turning real fast too. Also thinking of just a regular steel made saw blade that can be touched up with just a 4" grinder as it will be seeing more dirt than wood,it goes without saying.

I'd prefer to have stumps completely gone underground versus doing the stump grinding routine, FYI.

Spend several hours on the end of a mattock& resharpening chainsaw blades and you'll get the vibe i'm trying to accomplish.

Also tried the various burning techniques ( these are freshly cut down trees) of various types,in a torn out fence row. After a few days of trying burns in a 35 & 55 gallon barrel at best stumps were maybe half burned.

Anyone have any ideas on this device?

Thanks,
Barry

I'd use a stump grinder to cut & unburry the roots. Or go with the standard method of using a back or track hoe to dig em out.

Hello,

I should have mentioned ( have tractor info/size in user info panel) am wanting to do this with a very modest 25hp Mitsubishi tractor. Would also like this setup to be such that could be gotten into most residential areas as well. Anyway you do it stump extraction is a pain ,period.
Have even toyed with the idea of doing a stand alone heavy roto tiller with sidemount /well shielded saw blade that could be run both vertically and 45 degree horizontally.

Seen this stump removal some time back. Not so sure after looking at this video this isn't a bad way to go,albeit you need lots of 'pull' room. :)

That stump pull is impressive! It makes me want to go and get some gear to try it myself! Also if you don't have the room to drive you could use a capstan winch, we use one at work for pulling wire into conduit that is rated for something like 4000 pounds.

Yeah I like that too. Since I'm not getting very far with the backhoe on my larger stumps, I guess I'll have to get some tackle and give this method a try. I've got lots of trees for anchors and too many big stumps that need to be dealt with.

somebody has to show me the math on this. Does the stump you anchor to need to be bigger than the stump you are pulling? How many wraps does it take? I got kinda confused when the second set of pullies came into play.

The rigging is attached to at least 2 trees & the tractor. Yes, your combined pull points need to be stronger than the stump.

Also attaching your rigging low on your anchors & high on the stump gives you some additional leverage pulling it down as well as pulling over.

Yeah, my stumps in question are at last 50 to 70 inches in diameter.(old multi trunk maples). Closest trees is a 30" Cedar.

Guess I am back to chainsawing.
