Tractor Supply carries Ingersal Rand air compressors that are under $1000. They have sales on them from time to time.

The IR compressors that they carry don't particularly care for a lot of start/stop cycles, they like to start and run continuous. According to everything I read on them, they won't last long if the motors cycle. For that reason, I bought a Campbell Hausfeld at TSC about 3 years ago. I use it to run a sandblaster, paint sprayer, air/hydraulic pump for my bender and normal air tools and tire stuff. It's still going strong.

I got one (Kobalt) from Lowe's a few years ago. Very pleased with it .

My big Saylor-Beall is continuous run. All that means is its head unload. I prefer continuous run because starting amps on a motor is 3 times running amps... IOW, it runs cheaper. It gets up to 135 PSI and freewheels, drops to 130 and the head unloader drops the valves in the seats an it pumps again. Been going fine for 40 years now (I'm the 2nd owner). My rotary screw is also continuous run, same setup. 135 and it derates, 130 and it's online but it's always spinning.

Well, 8 years ago I needed a compressor that could put out a lot of volume and money was tight. I bought the 2 cylinder harbor Freight model for $160, and then used a good condition used hot water tank. I got a good deal on a 5 HP motor and then bought the unloader valve, and some hose, and I was all set. It has worked flawlessly for me for more than 8 years, and I use it a LOT. The tank was free. The motor was $150. so for about $300 I got a unit that put out over 15CFM at 90PSI for about $300. don't forget to use a safety value on the Hot Water Tank.

5 HP 145 PSI Twin Cylinder Air Compressor Pump

Nothing that will impress your friends, but it has been super for me for a long time. I would definitely do it again

Thanks but I would be afraid of a hot water tank. Might try something similar with a used air tank. Ed

I have had an Emglo for over 20 years that has been great in my shop. It's too big to haul to jobs, even thought I have several times, so I also have a smaller compressor that is easy to haul around. When I first started looking for a second, smaller compressor, I went with the Emglo that DeWalt had their name on. First one wouldn't build up air pressure. I returned it and the second one died on me in a day. I tried several other brands, and they all seem to last about a year, then die on me. Currently I'm very happy with a small Bostich brand compressor with a very low draw on power. My little Honda generator only puts out 13 amps and I needed something less then that. It's been great!!! I don't know if Bostich makes bigger compressors to meet your needs, or if you can get a true Emglo without any connection to DeWalt, but of the dozen or so brands that I've owned over the years, those are the two I like the best.
