Slightly closer but still nothing yet.

If the 'expert TBN think-tank' is going to to cation people about pulling I would suggest some MORE LIKELY things than filping backward a HST machine like:

1)pulling the load near killer bees and being stung to death.
2) nearly stalling the engine, having it run backwards, and throwing a piston through the operator's head.
3) being murdered by the spouse for spending too much time on said tractor.
4) Obama taxing you for excessive CO2 use.
5) Trump building a wall arround your tractor because he's intimidated by the size of your hands.

TBN gives (and has given me) tons of great advice. But the prohibition on pulling from anything other than the drawbar (regardless of the type of transmission) is often hysterical, apocalyptic, and, if the person has a moders HST machine, wrong. IMO.

I pull full force right from the top pulley on my Fransgard pto winch, if the tractor wont stay down I scoop up some dirt or rock in the bucket. The Fransgard site show re-hooking the choker chains to the slots below, I find that retarded, unproductive and keeps more of the log dragging on the ground.

Here is something to think about. When I got my DK40se with HST and I was learning how to use the HST (previous tractor was JD 790 gear) I ran into a handful of our fences. What would happen to me is I would be pushing snow and headed for an open gate. With a good bucket full of snow and icy conditions steering would be limited and the wheels would be slipping/spinning. Sometimes I wouldn't be lined up but would keep pushing untill I was a few feet out, the plan was to stop back up and adjust. What would happen is a few feet from the fence I would let go of the peddle and try and back up but the HST would keep going and slowly slow down even if I hit the breaks, and I would run into the fence. The gear tractor would stop dead as soon as I pushed the clutch and break. I have experienced this while towing a trailer up hill as well. I was climbing a steep hill in low and one of the trailer tires caught on a rock and stopped it and the tractor didn't want to stop. The front started to lift and when I tried to stop it kept turning regardless of how hard I was on the breaks. The hill is steep and rocky and the old 790 always struggled but all it took was breaks and clutch and things would go back to safe in an instant, the HST has to slow itself down. I have learned that with an HST if you start to spin even if you are still progressing forward if things start to go bad it will take alot longer to make corrections.

Edit: I tow the the trailer from the draw bar but it is a well balanced trailer and there is generally almost no weight on the tractor

I think this is a TBN myth; that you should ONLY ever pull from the draw bar. Period. End of story. Certainly a geared tractor can easily be flipped by pulling from above the rear axle height (i.e. the 3pth). Theoretically a HST equipped tractor can be flipped the same way if you ignored all instincts and didn't take your foot off the pedal. So my question: has anyone actually flipped a HST CUT over backwards from pulling? Not from a boom pole and not just getting light in the front end. Don't care if you got the front wheels off the ground. Don't care what stories you've heard about a friend of a friend. For this thread, don't care what the manual says. Don't care about geared tractors or HST tractors with cruise control engaged Have any of YOU flipped?
Hey, has anyone here ever died after jumping out of a plane without a parachute?

Didn't think so.

Not likely to get representative replies as those who "flipped" their tractor may well not be alive or may never have participated in TBN (where they would have learned to use drawbar).

But there are plenty of news articles of people who have died from a plane crash. I've yet to see any proof of someone flipping a HST backwards let alone dying.

Just to keep the thread somewhat sober.

I've had wheels come up, and so keep my foot on the clutch pedal when climbing hills with a load of any kind on back. It's hard to get it right so the clutch slips just enough, as it can get exciting quickly.

And on that, it didn't happen to me, but.... an older gentleman that had farmed the place about three miles south was pulling a trailer up into his yard (Hilly lands here in this area) Something got hung up, the tractor reared and pitched the fellow off between the tractor and the wagon. Then the wagon ran him over. Killed him dead right there. Happened over five years ago, but it reminds me that the unexpected is the thing that gets a fellow. Keep your wits about you!

Without a doubt it's a real concern with a geared tractor.
Wear your seat belt with ROPS up regardless what your driving.

Sadly there there more vehement arguments to only pull from the drawbar than to wear your seat belt.

IT, your too rational to think this is valid argument. :drink:

Not a newsworthy story unfortunately. It takes blood, guts, murder or mayhem to make the news.
