How Do You Hook Up Your Gooseneck?

/ How Do You Hook Up Your Gooseneck? #21
I have never had a gooseneck trailer come off the ball, even a tow behind come to think of it. Can't say the same with a fifth wheel. I have had at least 2 come unhooked. 1 had at least 3 loads hauled before it unlatched. There was a reason we used to leave the winch line hooked up! CJ

I just looked at the Gooseneck trailer site gooseneck.net and every photo of their trailers shows chains hanging from them. Dollars to doughnuts your trailer has attachment points for safety chains in the neck of trailer near the down tube, just no,chains hooked up.
Well I double checked this afternoon when I got in and there are no/none/zero attachment points for chains on my trailer, I'm sure I could weld some on but it never had any from the factory.

My GN trailers have chains. Glad I hooked them at least one time. Was loading the tractor on the flatbed. Didn't lock the hitch. When the tractor hit the dovetail of the trailer, the neckover lifted off the ball and ... would have gone through the back glass of the truck ... except the chains stopped it.

Recovery was a painful step by step process. Move the truck forward, back the tractor, move the truck, back the tractor ... until the hitch was over the ball again.

FYI, The verbiage I read pertaining to Texas law says you cannot weld the chain. In your state, YMMV.

Big Bend Trailers advertises their trailers have this so you don't have to crawl into the truck bed to latch it.

>>>Latching Mechanism
You don't have to crawl over into the back of you truck bed to latch or unlatch your trailer. Just pull back on the lever above the jack handle to unlatch, and push the handle forward to latch

I've looked at their trailers and they look well built but I don't know anyone who uses one so I'm not sure how well it works.

10-4 I will probably do something about like what is in this picture, this is my fairly new flatbed deckover trailer and I like how they did these safety chains on it, so when I get ready to put them on my old stock trailer I will probably fix me something similar to what the picture shows.

My old 1993 Gooseneck brand stock trailer has a similar latch on it and since it doesn't have chains you don't have to get up in the truck bed to latch or unlatch your trailer.
