a warm 77 degrees already at 6am, going up to 90 today. Really lucked out with weather on the beach trip, hot but remarkably windy. Which meant kite flying yesterday was a huge success, near the water at the rv resort with several acres of open land, and all I had to do was let out the line and the kites took off. And all was fun until the one kite tied around a tree let loose, never saw it until we looked up and no kite. About ten minutes later a maintenance golf cart came toodling up and with a big smile the guy said that asked if we lost this? Almost came down on his head the entire other side of the property. So one kite returned unharmed. Adventures with second kite not so good. Flew awesomely, 6 foot long orange octopus with long streamers for legs. Up, up it went, lot of pull on the line since it was blowing over 20mph out. And then the plastic grip slipped out of my hand and off it went across the open area. I sprinted after the line, ran half way across the open field, but it was accelerating a lot faster than I was. I for sure can't run 20mph...
So I gave up and watched it fly over into a packed area of permanent rv homes and trailers. Geez. Line hung up on the shingles of one home, continued over the top of a neighboring rv, wrapped around that guy's a/c unit, and landed fifty feet further back.
After fiddling with this for ten minutes, I gave up and cut the line. Lots of extra line so no big deal, but I sure learned you have to hold on tight in high winds. Basically a great deal of fun playing like little kids and lots of folks drove by on their golf carts to compliment the kites.
Three hours on the beach, all the sun I could take, very rough water with heavy undertow, densely packed waves breaking quite a ways out, too hard to swim in. My metal detecting efforts netted me one roofing nail, that's it...at least it was good I got the nail off the beach. But no doubloons....
Going to swim in their pool this morning and then drive home this afternoon. Lots of mowing and watering to go home to.
I can't upload pics til I get home, but I got a few of some Marine Reserves VTOL jets (Harrier types) landing at a nearby airbase. Wow are those things loud when they switch to vertical operation.
Their flight path came right over our area curving back to the airport, and they were slowing down so much I kept looking at them thinking no jet can fly that slow. No normal jet...
Definitely not a stealth machine; sounds like a thousand crazed leaf blowers going by.
