Everyone is laughing at Californians. HS
I simply don't understand why you need to say this. Confusion? Ignorance? Envy?

Different regions of the country are different, anyone can find a place they prefer. But why not let others live as they wish? Why do you posess this need to criticize?

I see you call yourself Houston---. Saturday I checked my mailbox and introduced myself to the AirB&B guest spending the weekend across the lane. He said he was on vacation from 'south of Houston' and said he was greatly enjoying the nice summer weather here near our coast - 50's and fog until 11 am then an afternoon high of high 70's. Compared to 90's and suffocating humidity that he wasn't looking forward to going home to. I recognize that Texas culture is unique, I don't feel a need to visit it, and don't feel a need to make the sort of comments that you just did.

In all seriousness, I've been to CA 4 times. All were in southern CA from late 70's to mid 2000's. I enjoyed the ocean. I enjoyed the mountains. I enjoyed the giant Sequoias. I know I saw a limited amount of the place, but my overall impression was that each time I went there it was more of a hellhole than the last time. And I know that's because I was pretty much concentrated within a 100 mile radius of LA most of the time. But even out in the area between LA, Bakersfield and the Sequoias, even the farms and ag operations depressed me. I get the same feeling in Chicago. But even in Chicago, I can drive an hour and be away from it. I gotta get to northern CA some time. Maybe fly into SF and drive north to Canada?

North of SF is like a different State. The SF area sucks but I like the northern part of the state, and the people are a lot different too. Then again I think all cities suck no matter where they are.

Several options... SF, San Jose, Oakland and head North...

Many like to head South along the coast hitting Big Sur and the towns along the way...

I really like Western Washington and Victoria/Vancouver Canada...

Point Lobos isn't to be missed just south of Carmel.

Yep. In Hawaii. I enjoy traveling and seeing new things. From northern Indiana, we've been pretty much everywhere from Detroit through Canada to Niagara, NY, NY city, down to Miami, up towards Kentucky and back. Been all over Michigan, Minnesota. Been west as far as Yellowstone and Bozeman, MT. As far south as Denver and back. Been all over Arizona bottom to top and back. Places I'd still like to see in the U.S. are CA up to OR as mentioned. Never been much SW of St. Louis, so I'd like to see Arkansas and East TX. Also would like to spend some time on the Gulf coast from FL to TX. Almost got a house in FL panhandle for a week, but they had the oil spill so we went to Nag's Head again. Anyhow, lots of great places to see in the good old U.S. of A.

If you haven't been, the four corners area is nice. Lots to see and do.

Where did your city get the idea they had right control or to determine the rent you charge on your own property. HS

Are you kidding? They think they can and should control each and every aspect of your life. If this country keeps electing these idiots, they will gladly assume complete and total control your life, take everything you own and even dictate your thoughts and be responsible for nothing. It's what the looney left is all about. You'd think people would be smart enough to see how it worked out for the USSR etc. but no, they just keep running down that well worn path to ruin. Power and greed are the most powerful and habit forming drugs that ever existed.

Not quite but moving in that direction for sure...

The local chain grocery stores don't even go after shoplifters... it is all getting to be a big game and corporate has made the decision it is just a cost of doing business.

Friday, I had to deal with an aggressive pan handler hitting up patients for money... the guy said he would leave if I gave him $7

The last time he was here he took took a "Shower" in the public restroom and put feces all over the walls...

Third World or people with their brains fried from drug use??? I don't know but there are a lot more stoned people around since anyone can get a marijuana ID card.

Not to far away there is a homeless camp... like clockwork it will be cleaned out and the next day it is getting built back up...

Here is what gets me... a hobo camp looks worse than the county dump after about two weeks... trash, garbage, rotting food and feces everywhere.... no shortage of beer cans either.

If you choose to live in that sewer then you should expect to get this kind of thing and not expect for things to improve until it's already too late. Your best bet is to cut your losses, leave and let them wallow in their own filth. The SF area is firmly set in the left wing camp and that is were it is likely to stay in your lifetime.

The term Californicated doesn't exist for no reason.

The term Californicated doesn't exist for no reason.
The way I've heard that term used is by locals up in the Northwest - Oregon, Washington - who are appalled by people who were unhappy in California moving there and instead of blending in, bringing with them the same unhappiness and messes they had created for themselves when they lived in California.

I say let those unhappy people move on and take their attitude with them, we don't need them.

I'm not that old but have been dealing with local and state government long enough to see how things play out...

It always starts small and once established keeps growing with more funding and broader powers.

It is simplistic to say it is only a California thing or issue because everyone knows what starts in California doesn't stay in California.

Anyone that doubts this only need to look at emission controls... plenty told me their state would NEVER have them... now they do.

The irony is most of the politicians that start this nonsense are long gone when the real impacts hit... those that are new think this is how it has always been and simply build from there using it as a springboard.

When it comes to rent charged... those that aggresively pushed rents are the least effective... those, like myself that have long term tenants doing the best they can without increasing rents are the ones paying the price not being locked in...

One of the worst measures is Just Cause Eviction... just how am I as a private citizen suppose to PROVE illegal activity to a legal standard... and if any police or court dealings involve minors the records are basically out of reach.

Prior it was simple... if a tenant was a problem opting not to renew the lease was the way to go... having to declare a reason in triplicate to the city first leaves the owner wide open for a legal fight... even non-payment of rent will be contested and often the tenant simply fails to show... for a small fee legal services will file answers with the only goal of dragging out the time a non paying tenant can stay.

None of this was the case when I first started... so I know how fast these measures go from an idea to an entire city department that is funded through new assessments on owners.
