So, you don't actually " own " your property in the sense it's mine, I'll do what I want. You merely manage it for the city, and get to do the upkeep, and pay the taxes on it... One of our many lost liberties.

Pretty much the way it is... but not just here but it tends to be more extreme when it can take years to get a building permit for a single family home on a residential lot zoned single family... the design review means you build only if it meets all the requirements which includes how long a single outside wall can be... placement of windows, gutters and even house color...

Can anyone say, " Third World "???

Not quite but moving in that direction for sure...

The local chain grocery stores don't even go after shoplifters... it is all getting to be a big game and corporate has made the decision it is just a cost of doing business.

Friday, I had to deal with an aggressive pan handler hitting up patients for money... the guy said he would leave if I gave him $7

The last time he was here he took took a "Shower" in the public restroom and put feces all over the walls...

Third World or people with their brains fried from drug use??? I don't know but there are a lot more stoned people around since anyone can get a marijuana ID card.

Not to far away there is a homeless camp... like clockwork it will be cleaned out and the next day it is getting built back up...

Here is what gets me... a hobo camp looks worse than the county dump after about two weeks... trash, garbage, rotting food and feces everywhere.... no shortage of beer cans either.

What was the name of that mall in Oakland that closed in the early 90's? I went there a few times when driving for Airborne Express and was amazed that each store had it's own private security. Over half of the mall was empty because of theft. It wasn't too much longer until they just close the place down because nobody could make money there.

Eastmont... it was the site of the old Chevrolet Plant that closed in the 60's and was redeveloped into a shopping mall with national retailers...

My first home was just 3 blocks away and the hardware store nearby took up an entire city block... I paid 15k for it back in the 1980's

Foothill Hardware - CLOSED - 15 Reviews - Hardware Stores - East Oakland - Oakland, CA, United States - Photos - Phone Number - Yelp

The open smaller shopping center call Foothill Square has had a resurgence... about 45 million was spent and so far it seems to be holding it's own... it too was manufacturing and the birthplace of Peterbilt Trucks...

The rest of retail is pretty dismal... even Walmart closed up shop...

Which, of course, this all explains the existence of places like Walnut Creek . Birds of a feather flock together.

Of all the laws he signed, the one he vetoed is the only one I felt would have done some good. Making it a felony to steal a gun instead of a misdemeanor makes a lot of sense. Why would he veto that one?

"Among the vetoes was the only bill with bipartisan support, AB1176, which would have authorized a ballot measure asking voters to make it a felony to steal a gun or buy a stolen gun, regardless of its value."

Gov. Jerry Brown signs 6 gun-control bills, vetoes 5 - SFGate

Probably to keep the state and county prisons from overflowing. The Gov was ordered a few years ago by the federal court to reduce the CA prison population by 50,000 inmates or so (overcrowding).

^^^This is the basis for the shift or at least the excuse used.

Two tier in that those that make the law often are exempt from the laws they make.
